"SHOE Berea i `ppilication filed'` october 1li, 1921. Serial No. 507,593.
"To @ZZ who??? tin/ay concerne" e" i Be it known that l, STEPHEN GQWILSON, 'a citizen of the United 'States,` residing" in the city and `county of Philadelphia, State `of Pennsylvania, have Vinvented a` 'neiv` `and useful `Shoe Brush, of which 4the following is aspeciiication.`l y
lli/Iy invention consists of a slice brush forined light metal or other suitablernaterial" Ahaving `a y perforated` back and sides, outturned'runyvays in said sides`, slots and recesses in said N runways, means for stiff-'ening and strengtheningsaid sides "and back,
fio
. "inafter set forth.
and a frame or body carrier in Isaid runways, and means for locking said carrier and" said body in said runways and "back,"
llt consists also of a shoe brush 1'having a body formed of fabrics of coarse and fine natures 'for different lkinds of Work,` and a frame .or carrier attachabletheret'o adapted to carry hsaid body in the back of fthe brush vand permit said body to be reversed? and so present either of its surfaces to the shoes.
it consists also of novel means" for locking said frame vvith the sides ofthe bach. "lt consistsalso df other details as will be herejv The invent on is satisfactorily Iillustrated in the accompanying drawings, but the "11nportant instrumentalities thereofmay be varied, andso it is to be understood that the p tion` in the back,v the handle l0 thereof is invention not `limited `to `the specific de- "tails shovvn and described, `as 4long asp-they `are Within thefspirit or scope ofthe' claims. Figures "l, 2, and 3 represent perspective views of a brush embodying inly invention,

Figure 8 represents a perspective view` of a bracing plate employed "for the bfackor head one of `the ""stiffening. members employed' in l '"Figure 10 represents a: side'felevation of the device ona reduced scale.
Figure ll represents a vperspective View of 1 l l designates the-backen head of the `ing.
` Figure 9 represents a perspective View of "which the adjacent portionsof the side bars head. the `other plate ,19x are the faanember detached from its position shown inFigure 7. l i `Similar "numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures. 1
`Referring to the drawings.
brush,
the same being formed of light inetal or `other suitablle material *comprising lthe top 2, "andtlhedepending sides 3 providing ach'annber in said back. On the opposite inner faces of said Isides 3 arethe outturned parallel runways Li and "5 `which extend in the longitud-inal Idirection of said back.

thus locking the plate in t-lieback.

ln order to retain said holder in posin resilientJ and"providedwvith aslot l()X which is adapted to be sprung on the tongue or lip 10X on the adjacent end of `the back 1.
` `13 designates the rubbing material of the `biusliythe sarnebeing formed of a plurality `of plieslorpieceslliand 15 of felt or other fibrous material of different natures, one of them being a coarse fabric, and the other afinefabrid said pieces being foldedone "ing dirt" fi'onithe shoes, and the fine fabric inaybe used for the final finish of polish` fnorder to connectthebody with the back providejthe frainejor carrier 16 which consists ofthe sidebars 175011 one end ofwhich thesides of said head 19 areslots 20X in are receivedthus connecting said bars, plate fis the handle plate ldand the head 19)- ln slots 22 which are adapted to receive the bifurcated lugs 21 which are adapted to be sprung into said slots 22 thus connecting said head 19X'with the adjacent ends of the arms 17. By these means also the frame is prevented from spreading and disconnection i from the body. i
The bars 17 are fitted in slits 29 formed in the sides of the body and they are adapted to be fitted in the runways 5, and so the body is connected with the back and carried thereon. v
On the side ends of the plate 18 are the laterally projecting lugs or tongues 20 which are adapted to engage grooves or recesses 2OXX in the adjacent ends of the runways y,5 and act as stops to limit the movement of the body into theback 1.
.In order to hold the folds of the body lfirmly together cords 23 are passed through the grooves 29 in the body and recessesy 25 in the end plates 24 and then properly tightened and tied, thus holding said body and plates in compact form.
Interposed between the end folds of the body 13 are the plates 24 which have in their sides recesses 25 through which the cords 23 and bars 17 pass, and between their sides the openings 26 into which contiguous .portions of the sides of the adjacent folds of the body are compressed thus stiifening said portions and preventing lateral shifting of the plates.
On the sides of the bars 17 of the frame 16 are the ears 27 which project laterally therefrom and adapted to spring into the slots in the sides of the runway 5, one of said ears having thereon the notch 28 rwhich interlocks with the wall of the adjacent slot 30 and so prevents longitudinal shifting of the body in the back, and vice versa.
The frame 16 carrying the body of rubbing material 13 is applied to one end of the back and its ears 27 are fitting in the runways 5. The body is then slidingly pushed into the back to full extent being stopped by the tongues 20 abutting the recesses 2()xx in the end of the runways 5. Then the ears 27 spring into the slots 30, and the notch 28 engages with the wall of one of said slots and so the body is held in the back.
The brush may now be used first for removing the dirt from the shoes by the coarse (material of the body. Then the body is drawn out partly from the back, the holding action of the notch 28 on the ear 27 being overcome. Then the body is overturned and the lugs 31 remaining in the runways 5, see Figure 2. Then the body is raised to full extent when the frame is introduced into the runways 5, at opposite -ends of the sides and the body is pushed to full extent into the head, orvback, the lugs 31 sliding in the runways 5 until the tongues 20 reach the recesses 20"* and abut thereagainst thus stoppin the motion of the frame and consequent y that of the body of the brush, the ears 27 having sprung into the slots 29 and interlocking therewith.
The ne fabric of the head is now below and adapted to be rubbed on the shoe to complete the polishing.
The back is formed of light metal or other material which though strong is light in its nature, so the plate 6 is employed whereby said body and its sides 3 are stiffened and strengthened and so prevented from collapsing. The top 1 of the back is perforated to permit the moistener 7 to dry therein. Vhen the body is worn, it may be removed from the carrier, and a new one substituted therefor and fitted in the carrier and back for rendering further service as liereinbe fore described, while the back and carrier are retained therefor, and so to that extent the brush is renewable.
