Description

Yatented' Oct 10,1922.
and simplify the construction vany convenient way,
WILLIAM MALONEY, or oTTAwA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
LIGHT RAILWAY.
Application fiIedJ-anuary 21,1922. Serial No. 530,844.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MALONEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident ofthe city of Ottawa, in the Province'of Ontario and. Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Light Railways, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in light railways, such as may be used for sub urban traffic. or around manufacturing or mining establishments, or for the conveying of material for roads, or for a great variety of other purposes all well known in the art.
The general objects of the invention are to provide a railway that may be constructed at low cost and yet will be possible of maximum capacity for passenger or freight traffic.
Further objects are generally to improve of the railway to better adapt the various parts to perform the functions required of them.
And the invention consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a transverse section of an elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
In the drawingsflike characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
The railway is of the monorail type, comprising an upper supporting trough-spaced rail and a lower lateral bearing rail or member. In the embodiment illustrated I have shown double track construction but the same principles may be applied to single track construction.
Referring to the drawings:
A, A represent the supporting rails, each comprising a lower semi-circular troughshaped portion 10 and a fiat side connection portion 11 extending upwardly beyond the outer edge of the trough-shaped portion 10 and being secured by suitable bolts to the posts B.
but preferably in the way illustrated, in which their ends are sunk into base blocks 0 of concrete or the like, being connected at the top by a cross-con? necting brace 12 and at thebottom by a bracket 13 of lJ-shape, the sides of Which are connected by suitable bolts with the rod having spreaded These posts may be supported in posts. The lower the lateral bearing represents a he axis of these members being nearly in line with the side of the car, and the wheels themselves being supported on shafts 17 supported by Z-shaped brackets 18 which are braced with diagonal braces 19.
Additional support is given to the track by means of diagonally extending tension rods 20, extending from U-shaped channel brackets 21 on the top of each post 13, each ends extending through the flanges of the channel brackets with adjusting nuts thereon, the outer ends of the rods being connected to the track A. The lower tracks D may be connected at suitable intervals with cross-braces 22.
It will be seen that the railway being composed of few parts, it may readily be as sembled at low cost and with considerable speed.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specin cation and drawings shallbe interpreted as illustrated and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A light railway comprising, in combination, a plurality of fixed posts, an upper track supported on portion connected to shaped portion designed to support the Wheels of a car, a lower lateral bearing member extending parallel with the track and supported from the posts, and channel brackets on the posts with tension rods extending from the flanges of the channel brackets to the track between the posts.
2. A double light railway comprising pairs the the posts having a side posts and a troughing parallel to the track mounted on the lower parts of the posts.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of a Witness.
WILLIAM MALONEY.
Witness RUSSEL S. SMART.
