THOMAS WILLIAM SMITH, OF SOUTH ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
VANITY CASE.
Application filed February 11, 1922. Serial No. 535,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WILLIAM SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of South St. Paul, county of Dakota, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specification.
y invention relates vanity cases.
One object is to provide a simple and inexpensive protective container for toilet articles including an enveloping flap adapted to be turned back upon the body of the container to form a. keeper for holding the article upon a users hand.
more specific object is to supply a combined case and holder for puffs or pads em- .ployed in applying cosmetic powders, said article including a body member or back, a
to improvements in front member secured thereto and forming a pocket in which a powder puff may be partially sheathed and a reversible flap secured to the body and serving in one relation, to sheath the otherwise exposed portion of the powder puff and, in the other relation, to
, supply an inverted pocket or finger hold at the rear of the case, in which the fingers of a users hand may be inserted to manipulate the case in applying the powder pufi.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a case embodyin my invention; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view, the flap being reversed to expose a powder pad within the case and to form a finger hold for said case; Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the manner in whichthe case is held when the powder pad is used and Fig. 5 is a front view illustrating an alternate form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, it will be observed that my inproved case comprises, es sentially, a back or body member 10, a front pocket piece 11 and a reversible flap 12. Said case is preferably formed of sheet rubber stock, but may be constructed from any permit of the reversal of the flap 12 onthe back 10. The back member 10 is preferably disc-like in form. Correspondingly, the pocket piece 11 and flap 12 are segmental in shape, the same being secured to the body, in opposed lapping relation, by a seam 13, or other joining the curved scam, I employ a. binding 14 at the margin of the article to reinforce and enhance the appearance thereof. The free margin of the flap 12 well overlaps the free margin of the pocket piece 11, said piece and flap, in lapped relatlon, constituting a close fitting protective covering for an object within the case.
he present article is especially adapted as a combined case and holder for a powder puff or pad, substantially equal in diameter to the diameter of the article itself. The piece 11, together with the back 10 supplies a pocket in which a pad 15 is partially sheathed. The flap 12, in position overlapping the piece 11, completes the covering for said pad, and, in reversed position at the rear of the back 10, forms an inverted pocket or keeper constituting a finger hold for the hand of a user (Fig. 4).
The parts of the case being preferably, though not necessarily, constructed of sheet rubber stock protects the powder coated pad 15 against moisture and supplies a sanitary article, capable of being repeatedly washed without injur thereto. The liability of the sheet rub er structure ma es for the ready manipulation of the flap 12 and the elasticitythereof lends a yieldin quality to the finger hold formed by said ap.
In the modified form of my invention (Fig. 5), I supply an auxiliary pocket for a rouge pad or other article. This pocket is formed by securing a segmental piece 16,
'at its curved margin, to the front side of the back member 10. Said auxiliary pocket is located above the pocket piece 11 and is rendered accessible, by bending forward the unsheathed portion of the pad 15. Said auxiliary pocket piece 16 is shown as secured to the back memberlO by a seam 17 This attachment, however, like the attachment of the pocket piece 11 and flap 12 to the back 10, may be accomplished by vul canizing or other suitable methods.
In use, the case is grasped in one hand,
the fingers at the rear of the back member 10 and the thumb against the pocket piece 11. With the free hand, the flap 12 is of the pad within the case.
turned over the back member 10 (Figs. 3 and 4) into position embracing the fingers thereagainst. Said flap in such relation supplies a pocket or keeper forming a finger hold. Being readily applied, upon the manipulation of the case, the unsheathed portion of the pad 15 is conveniently used without disturbing the position baid pad may be reversed in its pocket and rotated therein to present fresh surfaces at its outer unsheathed face. Returning the flap 12 to normal position closes pletes the covering for the pad 15.
Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without de arting from the spirit of my invention.
invention, what I aving described my protect by Letclaim as new and desire to ters Patent is:
. 1. The combination with a powder pad, of a case including a back, a front member secured thereto and forming a pocket for partially sheathing said pad and a flap also secured to the back and normally lapping said front member to cover the otherwise unsheathed portion of said pad, said flap being designed to be turned over the back to.expose said unsheathed portion of said pad and to supply a finger hold for manipulating the case in applying the pad.
2. In a case, a body comprising a back, a front pocket piece attached thereto, and a reversible flap secured to the back, said flap serving alternately, to complete the front of the case by lapping said pocket the case and compiece and to, form a finger receiving pocket at the rear of the case.
3. The combination with a powder pad,
of a case therefor including a back and companion pad coveringpieces secured to said back, one of said pieces being adapted to be turned over, the back to supply a finger hold for manipulating the case in a plying that portion of the pad normall covered by said piece. 4E. The combination with a powder pad, of a combined case and holder therefor, comprising a back, a' front piece, forming a pocket at the bottom of the article for partially sheathing said pad, a flap to cover that portion of the pad projecting from said pocket, said flap being reversible to expose said projecting portion of said pad and to form a finger hold at the rear of the article, and an additional front piece on said back forming an auxiliary pocket, above said pad holding pocket, said auxiliary pocket being normally covered by the unsheathed portion of the pad, but rendered accessible by a forward flexing movement of said portion of said pad.
5. A pliable case, comprising a back and opposed lapping pocket pieces joined thereto and forming front enveloping members, the overlapping piece being reversible on said back to permit of access to the interior of the case and to supply a finger hold at the rear thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have name to this specification.
THOMAS WILLIAM SMITH.
