Application filed June 24,
i To all whom it may concern." 1
Be it known that I, BYRON AL LMlIZirnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, irrthe county of Richland and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Machine Guards, of which the lolloiving is a specift cat-ion. i
My invention relates to"improvements in machine guards, and more particularly to i that class ortype known as safety press guards particularly"designed and adapted for use; in connectionwith power shears, presses, and the like. This invention relates more particularly to means for preventing apower shears or press from operating to move or close the knife or die carrying movable n iember he tore the operator has removed his hand from between such knir'e or die, as the also may be, and the subjacent or relatively fixed press or bed memberthereby insuring sat 0y and avoiding accidents. i a
h The primary object of: the invention is to provide generally improved satiety guard of this class which willbe exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and eflicientiin use. 1 1 A. further object is to provide a safety guard of this class whiclrmay be readily attached to or detached from any ordinary power machine of the power shear type, and i wwhich will not in any way interfere with the ordinary operation of the same. still further object is to provide an im proved device of this character which will be operated easily and positively without unduly long movement or extra exertion, and which will necessitate the complete removal of the operators hand from beneath the shear before the clutch can be thrown in and to hold the clutch operating means until the guard is in protected position and to operate such clutchoperating means only by completely closing the guard.
A still further object is to provide a guard which will not obstruct or interfere with the use of the shear for all purposes, and which will not only normally not obstruct theline of visiongoi? the operator but will enable the power machine to be operated in, the usual manner.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in ngthe From the rela or v Mainline GUARD.
r920. Serial' No. 291,281.
i the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part ot this spec1ficat1on, Figure l is a frontelevat-ion of the lmproved' guard applied. to a machine oi": the power shear type, the l and guard operating mechanism being in open or released position for teeth prior to the actuation oi? the machine clutch trip mechanisn i y i i Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same in closed or guard forming; position.
Fig. 3, a fragmentary side elevation of the machine clutch actuating lever inecha nisin, and illustrating in particular. the connection of the guard mechanism with the same.
Similar numerals or reference designate like parts throughout all the figures o? the drawings. 1
The iinproved guard is adapted to be attached to a power sh ear machine oi any ordinary form or type, an d the trains of the in chine maybe of any suitable form embodying; the usual relatively lined ineniber or bed l, and. the relatively movable lrniit'e member The guard supporting and actuating mechanism may extend entirely across the face or teed portion of the machine, as shown in Figs. "l and 2 ol the d ra lugs i y a means 0'? conveniently an quickly attaching the improved our "d toor remow V per tions or frame of the machine, a suitable supporting? bracket 3, is provided, said bracket 3, in the term shown in Fig, 2 of the drawin, axi, extending across of the machine frame and. above the mloiith or teed portion thereof and heingconnected at opposite ends on suitable machine frame lugs or brackets 1, by means of" attaching bolts 3 i The guard t, may be of any suitable and convenient form, and is adapted to be re ng and a I with the movements of said lever, and Where,
stance, being connected to the link 7, at one vend, and. to the supportinglbracketcr bar 3, at thei other I i As a means of connecting the guard 4, and
guard carrying and actuating levers 5, with the clutch operating foot lever such guard will-be operated simultaneously "by such guard [will be thrown into guard forming position upon theeactuation ofthe clutch mechanism for operating therela- ,tively movable shear carryingmember ofthe machine-andupon the initial moven ent'of the latter, the link '7 is provided with aconnectin 'link lO, connected to a bell crank 11,
. pivota ly connected, in the present instance,
to the relatively fixed portion of the machine frame by means of a pivot bolt 11, one end of said bell crankll being connected to a vertically extending armor link 12, the latter being connected at its lower end-by means ofanattaching or bearing bolt 12*;- at I 'th'ejside' ofv the foot lever, as shown most yclearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
- Having thus described one of the embodiments of .my'inventiom what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In a guard for power machines, amachine frame including relatively fixed and movable members, an attaching bracket attached' to. a stationary portion of the machine frame and extendin across the face thereof and above the fee portion leading tosaid'movable machine member, alever pivotally-mounted on saidbracket and dej pending across the feedportion thereof, a lguard membericarried by said lever and jadapted to be moved into and out of the feed 7 path ofsaid machine, a-link connected to the v upper-end of said lever, a crank arm consaid 9 whereby signature.
nected to said link, a s ring connected to said link for normally ho ding the same and ard and guard carrying lever out of guar formin position, means for operating said mova' le machine member, a clutch operating tri lever at the side of said ma chine frame or causing the actuation of said movable machine member, and a link extending between said crank arm and clutch operating trip leverwhereby said guard and guard operating mechanism will be actuated and thrown into guard forming position on the initial actuation of said clutch and movable machine member operating mechanism.
2. In a guard for power machines, a machine frame including relatively fixed and movable members, an attaching bracket attached to opposite sides of said machine frame and extending across the face thereof and above the feed portion leading between said movable and relatively fixed members, levers pivotally mounted on said bracket and having their free ends depending across the feed portion thereof, a horizontal guard member carried by and connecting the free ends of said leversand adapted to be moved into and out of the feed path of said machine, a'link connected to the upper ends of said levers, a second link connected to said link, a crank arm connected to said second link, aspring connected to said first link and bracket for normally holdin said ard and guard carrying levers out 0% guar forming position, means for actuating said movable machine member, a clutch operating trip lever at the side of said machine frame for causing the actuation of said movable machine member, and a link extending between said crank arm and clutch operating trip lever whereby said guard and ard operating mechanism will be actuate and thrown into guard forming position on the initial actuation of said clutch mechanism and said machine operatingl mechanism.
In testimony w ereof I have afiixed my BYRON A. MILLER.
