Description
T M. MABT IN.
Saddles for Wire-Ways.
N0. 143,087. Patented September23,1873.
Vitnesses Inventor Q fl Z 7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS M. MARTIN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND ANDREW S. HALLIDIE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SADDLES FOR WIRE WAYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,087, dated September '23, 1873 application filed August 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs M. MARTIN, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Saddle for \Vire Tram-Ways; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable anyperson skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to the saddle which is used on wire-rope ways, commonly known as wire tram-ways, for supporting the load of ore or other substance which is being transported along the rope. My improvement consists in constructing the saddle with an inner surface of india-rubber or other flexible material, for the purpose of providinga proper bearing upon the rope.
These saddles are usually constructed of a combination of iron and wood; but when wood is used for a bearing the position of the saddle is not steady, but it will shift easily upon the rope.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an end view.
A represents the frame or outside of the saddle, which is made in the usual V-shaped form, and-may be made of wood, iron, or other suitable material. Inside of the frameI place a lining, I), of india-rubber, which is also made in the form of a V, so as to fit closely to the under side of the saddle. This india-rubber lining can be secured to the frame by cement, bolts, or other convenient and suitable means; but I prefer to unite the two together by means of screws or bolts 0 c, which pass through the upper or narrow part of the saddle, and also through the upper or narrow part of the indiarubber, as shown. This india-rubber lining gives an elastic bearing for the saddle upon the wire-rope, and the friction of the rubber prevents the saddle from shifting its position, thus greatly improving the saddle.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the inside india-rubber with the saddle-frame A, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
THOMAS M. MARTIN. [1,. s.]
