H'USKING PEG.
Application led March 22, 1922. Serial No. 545,807.
tain new and useful Improvements in Husking Pegs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a husking peg, and has for its object to provide a device of this character wherein the husking peg can be folded or closed similar to the knife blade of a pocket knife.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character includinga husking peg or blade capable of being incorporated in a conventional form of pocket or jackknife handle.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein a .husking peg may be attached, to a conventional form of handle, the handle being provided with means for holding the peg in its extended and folded positions.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construe tion and arrangement of parts to be here` inafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a plan view of a husking peg and pocket knife constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the peg being shown in its extended position;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the structure shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the husking peg partly open; and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the husking peg and knife in their closed positions.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a knife handle comprising a pair of plates 6 and 7, the end portion 8 of the plate 6 being longitudinally curved and secured to the end portion 9 of the plate 7, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
ln addition to the curved end 8, the plates are held in spaced relation by means of the knife blade spring 10, said spring being disposed between one of the corresponding longitudinal edges of the plates of the handle, the end 11 of the spring extending inwardly between the plates and inwardly of the end portions 8 and 9 of the plates, so as to hold the plates in spaced relation and at the same time permit the end portion 12 of the spring to function in the well known manner. Pivoted between the end portions 13 and 14 of the plates 6 and 7 is a knife -blade 15, said blade having the usual shoulder 15a for the reception of the end portion 12 of the spring to hold said knife in its extended position.
In connection with the structure above described, an attachment of general utility is provided, and comprises a husking peg or blade 16. This peg may be made of material treated to withstand considerable strain, for instance, such as scraping articles and husking corn. rlhe peg 16 corresponds in length to the length of the plates 6 and 7, and is slightly less in width than the width of the plates. The peg 16 is pivotedinwardly of its end 17 to the plate 6, adjacent the end portion 13 of the plate, so that when folded the blade will be protected by the plate 6, and when extended, the end 18 of the blade is projected a considerable distance beyond the end portion 13 of the plate. It will be noted that the end portion 18 is curved longitudinally and also tapered so as to facilitate husking of corn. The blade is also provided with a flexible handle member 19 adapted to hold the hand in position when the peg is being used for husking corn.
It is, of course, necessary that the peg be held stationary when it is either in its folded or extended position. rlhis is provided for through the medium of a leaf spring 20, the central 'portion 21 of the spring being bowed to provide a catch. The spring is intended to be embedded in a groove 22 provided in the plate 6 of the knife. The end portion 23 of the spring is secured to the handle in the groove, while the end portion 24 is free to slide in the groove, the groove being longer than the spring. The inner face of the peg 16, or that face disposed adjacent the plate 13, is provided with spaced sockets 25 and 26, said sockets being also disposed in spaced relation to the pivot of the p When the device is not in use, the blade 16 is swung so that the curved end portion 18 will engage the curved end portion 8, thereby protecting the curved end portion of the peg and at the same time preventing the peg from tearing or injuring the clothing ofthe user, as the size of this tool permits the tool to be carried at all times in the pocket of the user. When in its close-d position, the
catch portion 21 of the spring is disposed in the socket 26 of the peg 16 so as to lock the peg in its folded position. l/Vhen it is desired to use the peg, the same is extended or opened similar to the knife blade. During movement of the peg 16 to its openl position, the spring 21 is, of course, urged into the recess 2O so that when the socket 25 is positioned above the portion 21, the resilieney of the spring Will urge the portion 2l into the socket 25, thereby locking the peg in its extended position, so that aooidental folding While the peg is in use is prevented.
From the foregoing it` will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel implementin the form of a husking peg and pocket knife which may be carried in the pocket of the user. The blade of the knife may be used for cutting the twine on bundles or shocks of corn, but the blade of the ordinary pocket knife cannot be used for all purposes or for the purpose of husking corn. This disadvantage is overcome by the addition of the husking peg, the desired curved end of the peg being possible, in view of the particular construction of the end of the handle. Furthermore, novel means is provided for locking the peg in its various positions so that accidental closing or opening is prevented, and the utility of this combined implement is unlimited.
lWhat is claimed is 1. A husking peg comprising a handle member, a husking peg pivoted exteriorly of insana-e the handle, said peg corresponding in length to the length of the handle, and means dis-l posed between the peg and the handle for holding said peg in its closed or extended positions.
`2. A husking peg comprising a handle member, a peg pivoted adjacent one end to one side of the handle member, one end of the handle being reduced to provide a protector, the opposite end portion of the peg being tapered and longitudinally curved, and adapted to engage the protector when in its folded position, a spring carried by said side -of the handle, said spring being adapted to engage the peg to hold said peg in its extended or folded positions.
3. A husking device comprising a handle having a recess in one side face thereof, a leaf spring secured at one end and yieldably movable Within the recess, said spring having a locking boss formed therein, a relatively long hashing blade, said blade having a recess in one end and the central portion of one side face thereof, the blade being pivoted adjacent its central portion and midway between the recesses thereof, to the side of the handle for substantial rotary movement, said recesses being adapted to alternately engage the boss of the spring to hold said blade in its extended or folded position, and a handle member carried by the outer face of the blade.
ln testimony whereof li hereunto aflix my signature.
