Description
Patented Sept. 12, 1922.

DAMPER.
Application filed February 15, 1921. serial No. 445,202.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES-B. CoALwnL a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Island, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dampers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an automatic damper for stoves, furnaces and the like,.the general object of the invention being to provide a damper which will be closed when the draft in the chimney is increased beyond a certain point with means for changing this point.
Another object of the invention is to provide adjustable weighted means for controlling the movement of the damper.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in, detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a stove-pipe supplied with my invention, parts being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In these views 1 indicates a part of a stove pipe which connects the stove or furnace with the chimney. This pipe has a hole 2 therein through which passes the rod 3 which is secured to the damper plate 5. That part of the rod which passes through the opening is curved so as to provide a fulcrum for permitting the swinging movement of the damper plate without the rod sliding through the opening. The exterior part of the rod is of substantially U-shape as shown at 6 and the limb of the U which is connected with the damper plate is bent to provide a series of depressions 7 for receiving the ring 8 of the weight 9. Thus the weight may be adjusted along the lower limb of the u-shaped part of the rod to counter balance the weight of the damper plate 5. I prefer to make the damper plate I beyond a certain point, either due to the velocity of the. Wind or the amount of heat produced by the fire in the stove or fur: nace, the damper will be moved upwardly by the pressure and suction created by the draft and thus the fire will bechecked in the stove. By adjusting theweight on the rod the point of closing of the damper can be regulated as desired. By my invention an even draft is secured in the stove which acts to conserve fuel.
By making the damper plate of the shape shown the current of air will hold said plate in a horizontal position when the draft is strong and the plate is prevented from striking either side'of the pipe as it would do if the plate was fiat. p
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent. I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that. such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims. 4 What I claim is 1. In combination with a chimney pipe,.adamper plate therein, a rod secured to said plate and passing through .a hole formed in said pipe, the part of the rodwhich passes through said opening being curved to provide a fulcrum for permitting the swing-- ing movement of the damper plate without the rodsliding through said opening and 90 the exterior part of said rod being-of U- shape and having the limb of the U con nected with said damper plate and bent to provide a series of depressions, a ring adapted to engage said depressions and a weight carried by said ring for counter balancing the weight of the damper plate. I
2. A device of the class described comprising a stove pipe adapted to connect the latter with a chimney, said pipe having a hole formed therein and a rod passing through said hole, a damper plate secured to said rod, the part of the rod which passes through said hole is curved to provide a fulcrum for perlnltting the swlnglng movement of the damper plate Without the rod sliding through the opening, said rod having its exterior part of U-shztped formation and the limb of the U being connected with a damper plate and bent to provide a series
