SHIBPING BOX FOR CANNED GOODS.
-Ap.p1icatiom filed August 19, 1921.
T 0 all 11*]: omit "11111 1,; comer-1,1,
Be it known; that f. RMSER'I L. LEMON, a citizen of the; E edl States; and a resident of lndianapoli ousnty oitMarion. and State of Indiana, have invented, a certain new and useful Shippin Bax for Canned Goods; and I do hereby dfec are that the following is a full, clear. and exact description thereof. reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in wh-i'clr like numerals refer to like parts.
This inuentiion relates to a paper or straw board box; and particularly to the construction there The chief obiect of the invention is to construct a;pa= =ieror straw board box for canned goods and the like in an improved manner" such that the portions subjected to the greatest strain and wear in its use will be reenforced. and that the box may be constructed of but a few parts with a. minimum of waste material.
The chief feature of the invention consists in constructing a paper or straw board box of but three parts in such a manner that the several parts cooperate with each other so as to provide a. strengthened construction as well as an economical construction.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the main box blank. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View of the box. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the end of the box and is taken on the line -14 of Fig. 1 and in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawings 10 indicates the bottom and 11 the side'portions of the box, while 12 indicates the top flap port-ions. As shown clearly in Fig. 2 the top flaps, sides and the bottom are formed from an integral sheet of paper or straw board and each end of the sides is provided with an end retaining strip 13. while each end of the bottom is provided with an end retaining strip ll. Each of the Serial No. 493,718.
aforesaid sub-divisions are integral with each other and separated by creases.these creases all being formed on the same side of the sheet. This permits the simplification of the manufacturing machinery such that the main box blank may be cut from a suitable sheet and creased in the same operation.
There are also provided two end members, the end forming port-ion being indicated by the numeral 15 and the top flap portion bemg indicated by the. numeral 16. As shown clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 3., the main box blank is folded into trough-like shape and the end strips are turned at right angles to the sides and bottom and therefore inwardly towards each othen. The end blanks are positioned within the trough-like blank in 17 or by any other suitable means. In this fashion it will be noted that the corners of the box include an integral edge in each instance and that the ends of the box are protected by the retaining strip, thereby greatly increasing the strength of the. box. In par-- ticular, when the box is used with canned goods the end piece 15 spaces the ends of cans from the crease between the strip 1- and bottom 10 so that the can ends cannot reach the crease.
The invention claimed is:
A paper or straw board box comprising a main body blank providing a box bottom, two sides. two top flaps. said top flaps being arranged to fold toward each other over the top of box so that their edges will abut each other. and end securing strips folded over each end of each side and each end of the bottom, a pair of end blanks each providing a topvliap so positioned as to fold over the top of the box so as to lie adjacent the under surface of the top flaps. and means for rigidly securing said end flaps to said end securing strips. substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto atfixed my signature.
ROBERT L. LEMON.
