Description

Patented Sept. 12 1922.
UNITED STATES;
:rosnrrr- J. MAGRADY, or crrrcaoo, rumors.
/ SCALE-BEAM rolsn.
Application filed December 12, 1921, Serial No. 521,s0s.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH J MAGRADY,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scale Beam Poise, of which the following is a specification. e I
My present invention relates generally to scales, and more particularly to double beam scales, my object being the provision of an improved adjustable poise applicable to both right and left hand beams and embodying means protecting the movable parts against dust dirt, rain and the like, as Well as one whi'c may be readily inspected and will prevent the ready use of slugs for cheating purposes.
In carrying out my invention I provide a poise whose body is movable on a scale beam with just sufficient play to enable it to slide freely and is held in adjusted position by a vertically shiftable latch piece connected to a weight arm or lever, the latter of which functions as a'handle for releasing the latch member from the scale beam and normally acts to hold the'latch member in I effective position, the body as a whole being protected by a covering which is readily detachable therefrom and is pitched so as to shed rain and prevent entrance thereof into the body.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my present invention and forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the practical application of my invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional front view of my improved poise, and
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section taken centrally thereof on line 33 of Figure 2. I
Referring now to these figures I have shown in Figure 1 a double scale beam, to the upper beam 10 of which my improved poise is particularly adapted, the scale beam 10 having as usual spaced notches 11 with which the vertically shiftable latch pin 12 of my improved poise is adapted to cooperate at its lower tapering end.
My improved poise has a body 13 having a slot 14 therethrough in which the scale beam 10 is movable, the pin 12 working at the center of the body 13 above and Wltl1 in the upper portion of the slot 14 and within a tubular brass bushing 15 which will preor substitution of parts.
vent the pin 12, the latter of which is preferably formed of hardened steel, from rusting and sticking. I i
The front wall of the body 13 has a centrally located sight opening 16 and the upper portion of the body has a transverse groove 17 within which a lever 18 is mounted, the latter having a shiftable pivot 19 in the rear ortion of the groove and having its forward end extended forwardly of the body and provided with a weighted handle 20. Lever 18 also has a slotted portion intermediate its ends above the bushing .15 to receive the reduced upper end of the latch pin 12; withwhich it is connected by a pivot 21 so that the handle 20 as Well as the lever 18 itself serveto normally hold the latch pin 12 in lowermost position while by raising the handle 20, the latch pin 12 may be easily'lifted in order to free the poise for sliding movement along the scale beam. This sliding movement may if so desired be facilitated by rollers 22 mounted in the body 13 adjacent opposite sides thereof as seen in dotted lines in Figure 2.
Overthe uppergrooved end of the body a covering in the form of a pitchedroof 23 is mounted, this roof having depending front and rear flanges 24 and 25 which be secured to the front and rear portions of the body 13 by screws or like fastening members 26 adapting the roof to later removal for inspection purposes or for repair The forward flange 24 has a vertical slot 27 through which the lever 18 extends, so as to permit of the slight vertical movement of this lever necessary for the raising of the latch pin 12 free of the scale beam, and by reference toFigure 3 it will be noted that the lever 18 is preferably provided with a flexible strip 28 of thin metal or other material which engages the inner surface of the forward flange 24 of the roof so as cover its slotted opening 27 at all times and prevent the entrance of dust, dirt and moisture.
It is thus obvious that by virtue of" the particular manner in which the latch pin is mounted in connection with the body 13, the poise as a whole is adapted to both right and left means, the latch pin is prevented from sticking, the parts are protected from dust, dirt and moisture, except as to the small amount passing through the sight opening 16, and the moving parts are morea 1,eee,e51
that the use of readily insertable and easily removable slugs for cheating purposes defeated.
I claim:
1. A poise having a solid body slotted. through from side to side for the reception of a scale beam on which the body is slidable, said body having a vertical. bore and a forward sight opening, a bushing in the said here, a latch pin inoi 'able in the bushing, a lever having a shiftable pivot at its rear end at the upper portion of the body and having a pivotal connection intermediate its ends with the upper end of said latch pin, said lever having a forward end projecting forwardly beyond the body and prm'ided with a handle, and a detachable covering for the upper portion of the body in the form of a pitched roof having depemling flanges connected to the body.
2. ll scale beam poise inchiding a body having a scale beam rcceiv' slot there through and a centrally dispoed forward, sight opening, a vertically shii'table latch pin in the upper central port of the body, a lever pivoted to the body and to the latch pin and having a forwardly projecting portion provided with a handle, and a cover detachably associated wi h the upper portion of the body.
3. A scale beam poise including a body having a scale beam receiving slot therthrough and a centrally disposed forwz" sight opening, a vertically shiftable la pin in the upper central portion of the body, a lever pivoted to the body and. to the latch pin and having a forwardly projectin portion provided with a handle, and a cover detachably associated with the upper portion of the body, said cover having depending flanges secured to the body and one of which is slotted to receive the said lever and permit vertical shifting movement of the latter.
4. A scale beam, poise including a body having a scale beam receiving slot therethrough and a centrally disposed forward sight opening, a vertically shift-able latch pin in the upper central portion of the body, a lever pivoted to the body and to the latch pin and having a forwardly projecting portion provided with a handle, and a cover detachably associated with the upper portion. of the body, said cover having depending flanges secured tothe body and one of which is slotted to receive the saidlever and. permit vertical shifting movement of the latter. said lever having a flexible strip ongaging the inner surface of the slotted flange of the cover around its said slot, for the purpose described.
5. A scale beam poise including a body having a scale beam receiving slot there tl'irough and centrally disposed forward sight opening, a vertically shiftable latch pin in the upper central portion of the body, a lever pivoted to the body and to the latch pin and hzwing a forwardly projecting portion provided with a handle, and a cover detachably sociated. with the upper portion of the body, the body having a vertical bore above its slot and a bushing in the said bore through which the latch pin is movable.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOSEPH J. MAGRADY.
