CHARLES nknocgnns, or NEW Lennon, yconivncrrrcnr.
y To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ROGERS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at f' New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in YarnReels, of which the following is a specification. y
rlhis invention relates to certain `new and useful improvements in yarn reels, and the l0 primary object thereof is to provide a ,reel which maintains the hank or skein of-yarn under tension so as to thereby take up all slack in the hank or skein, during unwinding of the yarn from the reel, thereby preventing overrunning of the hank or skein.
A further object of the invention is to provide spring means for effecting the tension on the yarn and to provide a simple and economical structure which can be easily and quickly operated to place the hank or skein under tension.
Still further the invention aims to provide a novel structure K for the purpose stated which involves a minimum of parts so as to reduce cost of production and also likelihood of derangement of the parts.
Other and further objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of 'the invention;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure l; and t Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a shaft Sis employed upon which disks l and 2 are mounted, disk l 40 being rigidly secured to the shaft, while disk 2 is rotatable on the shaft. The disk l carries a series of radial outwardly extending arms 3, while the outer ends of the arms have transverse bolts 4 attached thereto.
The disk 2 has a corresponding series of arms 5 pivoted at their inner ends thereto at 5 while the outer ends of these arms 5 have the yarn spools 6 secured thereto.
For the purpose of maintaining the disk 2 under constant tension, a coil spring 7 is employed having its inner end secured in fixed relation to the disk l and shaft S, while its outer end is secured to a bolt 8, the latter being adjustably secured in a curved slot 9 formed in the disk 2, so as to allow Yann REEL.
`Application filed October 11, 1921. Serial No. 507,072.
of regulation yof the tension of the spring as desired. c
A `pivoted, spring tensioned latch 10 is mounted on the hub 2lvof the disk 2 and has its effective end formed to contact a stop ll carried by thedisk l'. y The ybolts 4 extend through and operate in slots 5 formed in the arms 5 so that upon relative rotation of the disks l and 2, the arms 5 and therewith the spools 6 will be moved from the positiony shown in dotted lines to the full line position of Figure l. f
The operation is as follows:
The operator first depresses the outer end of the latch l0 releasing the effective end thereof from the stop 11 and ythen effects relative'rotation of the two disks l and 2 so as to wind up the spring 7 and thus increase the tension thereof, at the same time causing the bolts 4 to move through the slots 5 so that the parts are moved from the dotted tothe full line position of Figure l. The latch is then released causing the edective end thereof to again contact with the stop 11 holding the reel in they contracted or full line position of Figure l. kThe hank or skein of yarn is now placed on the reel, eand the latch again depressed to disengage same from the stop 11, which allows the spring 7 to exert its action or tension on the disks causing the latter to have a tendency to move the arms 5 and therewith the spools 61' outwardly or from the full to the dotted line position of Figure l. lIn this manner, the skein or hank of yarn is maintained under constant and uniform tension, so that all slack is taken up and overrnnning of the hank or skein is prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what kI claimfas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a yarn reel, a shaft, a disk fixed on the shaft and having radial arms, bolts carried by the arms,y a disk rotatable on the shaft, arms pivoted at their inner ends to the rotatable disk and having spools on their outer ends and having slots receiving the respective bolts, a coil spring between the disks secured at one end to the fixed disk and adjustably securedk at its opposite end to the rotatable disk, a stop on the fixed disk, and a latch carried by the rotatable disk and engaging the stop.
2. In a yarn reel, a pair of relatively rotatable disks, a spring for normally ten- 110 .CII
sioning the disks to effect relative rotation thereof, spool carrying members pivotally carried by one disk, and means to cause the spool carrying` members to move about their pivots to move outwardly `from the last named disl through the tension of the spring.
3. In a yarn reel, al pair of relatively rotatable members, means to tension the members to effect relative rotation therebetween, spool carrying members svvingingly carried by one member and means to swing the spool carrying members outwardly fromthe last named member upon relative rotation of the pair of members.
4; In a yarn reel, a iiXed member, a rotatable member having a slot, spring means to tension the rotatable member, yarn engaging means carried by the rotatable, means lto eiieot inward and outward movement of said yarn engagingmeans upon movement of the rotatable member, al 'stopon the nner face of the iixed member, and a spring tensioned latch pivoted to the rotatable member` and extending through the slot thereof to engage opposite sides of the stop.
5. In a yarn reel, a relatively fixed disk having radial fixed arms, a relatively rotatable disk, slotted arms pivoted at their inner ends to the rotatable disk and having yarn engaging means on their outer ends,
