UNITED STATES PATENT SHEAR-S HOLDER.
Application filed December 30, 1921.
Be it known that I, THOMAS RAYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shears Holders, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to a holder or support for shears or any otherclass of tool used by various craftsmen in following their work and it has more particular reference to a means for conveniently supporting a pair of paperhangers shears, the primary object being to provide a holder or support which may be removably secured to and supported on a garment such as a. pair ofoveralls or i from the side portions of the users pants.
A further object of my invention is to provide a holder or support of the foregoing mentioned class wherein the principal parts are made of leather that consist of a substantially non-flexible shield on which is carried a horizontal leather strap, the central portion whereof is outwardly bulged relative to the, front face of the shield and thus providing a holder or supporting means for the tool, said strap being detachably secured to the shield and the free ends-of the strap extending beyond the side edges of said shield, said free ends being detachably secured to the garment, a vertically disposed looped leather strap is also connected to the upperportion of the shield and carries a split ring whichis connected. to a spring clip of the nature for easy suspension-over the upper edge of a garment or a waist-belt.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel holder or support of the foregoing mentioned character in which the shield portion is horizontally curved to conform to the contour of the wearers thigh or legvvhere the tool is carried, Furthermore. said shield is slotted adjacent its opposed vertical edges forthe reception ofa horizontal strap, the free ends of which are passed through the aforesaid slots around the rear face of theshield to extend beyond the vertical edgesthereof, and said free ends having a plurality of openings for adjust ably and detachably securing the same onto a garment with an appropriate fastening means such as a bachelor button or snap fastener. With the foregoing and other objects in view as will be more clearly apparent from or shield portion of leather or Serial No. 525,891.
the following description my invention conto wit: a fragmentary portion of a pair of overalls.
F igure 3-is a side view looking to the left hand of Figure l.
F igure. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional. detail illustrative of a preferred method of connecting the tool supporting strap to the main body or shield portion.
Figure 5,-is a transverse section to an enlarged scale illustrative of the'application of my device to an article of wearing apparel; and
Figure 6-is an enlarged detail showing the application of a, bachelor button for con necting together certain parts and said parts being shown operated for a clearer understanding of their operative function.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the main body the like of my improved tool holding device, said shield portion being horizontally curved to conform to the contour of the users thigh or leg. This shield portion 1 is provided with vertical slots 2 adjacent the ed es 3 thereof, whilst 4L designates a holding strap through which a pair of shears a indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2n-1ay be passed and said strap is supported horizontally in relation to the shield portion 1 by its passage through the slots 22, the central portion of said strap forming a loop 5 on the front of the shield 1 for holding the shears a While the free ends of the strap 4 are located on the rear of the shield l and extend beyondthe edges 3-3 thereof.
' To securely hold the strap 4 to the shield l and cause that portion of the strap lo cated on the front face thereof to be out wardly bulged relative thereto I employ snap fasteners 7-7 located adjacent the edges 3-3 aforesaid; said snap fasteners 7-7 including socket portions 88 carried by the shield 1 and headed portions 99 attached to the strap 1. The loop of the portion 5 -5 of the strap 4 is effected by a greater distance between the heads 99 on said strap a and a smaller distance between the center of the sockets S-8 on the shield 1 so-that it will be seen when said heads 9-9' are connected in the sockets 8-8 that portion of the strap 1 between the heads 9 will be outwardly bulged or looped with respect to the front face of the shield 1, the same being more clearly understood on an examination of the drawings,
The free ends 10 of the strap 4: passing through the slots 2-2 are folded around the rear portion of the shield 1 adjacent the edges 3-3 and beyond said edges they have their outermost portions provided with a plurality of apertures or holes 11-11 in certain of which is positioned the fastening means, such as a bachelor button 12 for securing the said free ends to a garment. The bachelor buttons 12 include the usual socket portion 13 adapted to be positioned in an opening 11 and carried by the strap 4c, whilst the headed portion 14. is carried by the garment; the connection of said headed portion 14 in the socket 18 resulting in the securing of the strap 4: to said garment. The plurality of openings 11 make provision for adjustment of the socket portion '13 horizontally with respect to the strap 1 to more conveniently locate said socket portion in the strap with respect to the head 14 penetrated through and carried by the material of the garment.
The shield 1 adjacent its upper portion is provided with. a horizontal slot 16 through which is passed a supporting strap 16, the free ends whereof are adjustably connected together by a buckle 18. 19 designates a ring through which the aforesaid strap 17 passes and by which the said strap is supported at its looped upper portion. This ring 19 is connected to aspring clip 20 adapted to be hooked over or on the upper edge 21 of the users nether garments, the clip 20, ring 19, and strap 17 being connected together forming a vertical support for the shield 1 to which the lower looped portion of the strap 17 is threaded or passed as before described.
From the foregoing description and an examination of the drawings it will be readily seen that by my invention I have provided a shears or tool holder of non-metallic material which is most preferable.
The unique manner of detachably connecting the horizontal strap 4: to the shield 1 and forming the central portion of said strap into a bulged-out loop 5 with respect thereto provides an effective means for holding and supporting a pair of paperhangers shears or the like. Furthermore, the extension of the free ends 10 of the strap 4 beyond the edges 8 of the shield 1 provides an effective means for detachably and adjustably connecting the device to the users garment. Still further the upper portion of the shield 1 being connected to and supported from a vertically disposed looped strap 17 provided with a split ring to which is connected a spring clip adapted for detachable slippage onto the upper edge of a garment ensures a novel and eflicient holding means whereby the shears or other tool is always maintained in a normally vertical position, whilst at the same time it is prevented from any swinging movement.
While I have described and shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be obvious the same is susceptible of minor detailed changes in the shape and pattern of the various parts thereof, and the rightfis hereby reserved to make such minor changes as reasonably lie within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A holder and support of the character described adapted for detachable connection to the users wearing apparel comprising a shield portion curved in a horizontal direction, said shield portion having slots adjacent its vertical edges and sockets intermediate said slots and said edges on the rear face thereof, a strap disposed in a horizontal direction through said slots across the front face of the shield and beyond the vertical edges from the rear face thereof, snap fastener heads mounted on said strap and spaced apart a greater distance than co-opcrative sockets on the rear face of said shield whereby a bulging-out of that portion of the strap on the front face of the shield results when said fastener heads and sockets are connected, a plurality of openings in the free ends of said strap, fastening means adapted to be adjust-ably positioned in certain of said openings to co-operate with fastening means on the users garment and. thereby secure said strap to the garment, a looped strap connected to the upper end of the aforesaid shield, a ring and spring clip looped on said strap, and said spring clip being adapted to engage over the upper edge or on the shield of the users wearing apparel. c. I
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
THOMAS RAYDER.
