PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgjmtd Aug 2Q, 1922 Application led March 11, l1921. Serial No. 451,595.
following is a specification.
This invention relates to pliers.
An import-ant object of this invention is to provide a pair of pliers having novel means whereby the jaws may be securely held in engagement with a tool such as the shank of a screw driver, a bit or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers having a compartment in which a variety of tools may be carried.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved pliers, parts being shown in section.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the improved pliers. y
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 8-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line %4 of Figure 1.
In the drawing,- wherein the numerals 5 and 6 designate the handles of a pair of pliers. The handles of the pliers are formed with shanks 7 pivotally connected by means of a bolt 8. The Shanks '7 of the handles are provided with jaws 9 between which various articles are adapted to be engaged. The opposite sides of the jaws 9 are formed with either rounded grooves or V-shaped grooves 10 within which the shank of a bit or the like is adapted to be received. Obviously, when the handles 5 and 6 are drawn together the tool confined between the jaws 9 will be securely held in position.
The jaws 9 are provided rearwardly of the longitudinally extending grooves 10 with transversely extending grooves 11 having teeth adapted to be engaged with the periphery of a pipe or the like. As illustrated in Figure 1, the jaws have their rear portions formed with blades 12 which form a wire cutter.
The means employed for securely holding the jaws together include links 14 and 15 with which a threaded nipple 16 has engagement. The threaded nipple 16 is formed with an annular flange 17 adapted to be engaged by the hand when it is desired to rotate the couplingfor either drawing the links 14k and 15 together or for separating the same.
The link 15 has its rear end portion arranged within a recess in the inner side of the handle '6 and is ypivotally connected to the handle by means of' a pivot pin 18.
The other link 14 is provided with a pin 2O which extends out through opposite sides of the same and is detachably received with- I in a socket 22 formed in the handle 5. The end portions of the pin 20 which are located on the opposite sides of the link 14C are engaged by a pair of spaced parallel longitudinally curved arms 24e which serve as a means for detachably connecting the links to the handle 5. It will be observed that the arms 24 terminate at a point spaced from one side of the passage so as to leave the passage open for the removal and application of the pin 20.
The jaw closing device is adapted for use only when it is desired tosecurely grip the jaws 9 with the shank of the tool or when it is desired for some other purpose to se curely hold the aws together. llVhen it is desired to merely press the handles 5 and 6 together by hands, the aw closing device is moved to its inner raised position by disconnecting the link 14 from the handle 5. This is accomplished by merely removing the pin 20 from within the socket 22.
A tool carrying compartment 25 is secured to the inner side of the handle 6 by means of fastening lugs or ears 26 which may be arranged in pairs and secured to opposite sides of the handle 6. The compartment 25 is adapted to receive small tools which are adapted to be engaged by the jaws 9. Access may be had to the compartments 25 by means of a door 28. y
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is z- 1. A tool comprising a pair of handles having their forward portions pivotally connected and formed with jaws, a link pivotally connected to one of said handles, a
coupling connected to said link, a second link connected to said coupling and having a transversely extending pin, one of said handles being formed with sockets to receive the ends of said transversely extending pin, whereby kthe second named link is detachably connected to the handles having the sockets.
2. A. tool comprising a pair of handles having their Yforward portions pivotally connected and formed with jaws, a link pivotally connected to one of said handles, a coupling connected to said link, a second link connected to said coupling and having a transversely extending pin, one of said handles being formed with sockets to re ceive the ends of said transversely eXtending pin, whereby the second nained link is detachably connected to the handles having the sockets, certain of Athe walls of said sockets being curved longitudinally whereby to detachably hold the pin within the sockets.
3. A tool comprising a pair of handles having their forward portions pivotally connected and formed with jaws, a link pivotally connected to one of said handles, a coupling connected to said link, a second link connected to said coupling and having a transversely extending pin, one of said handles being formed with sockets to receive the ends of said transversely extending pin, whereby the second named link is detachably connected to the handles having the sockets, certain of the walls of said sockets being curved longitudinally whereby to detachablyhold the pin within the sockets, one of said links having threaded engagement with said coupling.
