Application filed April 3, 1922. Serial No. 548,915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK L. BURNS and FREDERICK J. TnssiN, citizens, of the United States, residing at Three Rivers,
county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan,
provide an improved coupling for wire cables, brace wires and, the like.
A further object is to provide an improved coupling of this character which is composed of two duplicate parts and which may be joined to secure or clamp the wires connected without the employment of clamp ing bolts.
A still further object is to provide improved coupling of this character which is easily engaged and disengaged as occasion may require but while engaged is very secure.
Further objects, and objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which:
Fig. I is a side view of our improved coupling in operative relation on a cable.

Fig. III is an end View of oneof our improved coupling members the cable joined being sectioned on a line corresponding to line 38 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 7 is a cross section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. I.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, the wires 1 to be joined are illustrated as cables. These are shown conventionally as straight cables,
but it will be understoodthat our improved coupling is well adapted for use in braces, guy wires and the like where one end of a cable is formed into a loop.
, Ourimproved coupling comprises a pair of coupling members 3 each having a dovetailed tapered rib 4L and an oppositely disposed dove-tailed tapered groove 5 adapted to receive the dove-tailed tapered rib of the coacting coupling member, a pair of the members being disposed in reversed relation and joined by a longitudinal movement, the tongue or rib of one member 00- acting with the groove of the other.
Each coupling member has a longitudinal channel 6 disposed at each side of its center, the ribs and groovesbeing arranged in the longitudinal centers of the coupling members. These channels are preferably roughened or-spirally grooved to better grip the cables disposed therein. The ends of the coupling members are thickened or flared outwardly at 7 to provide a thickened face or end which may be struck with a hammer or other tool in driving the coupling members together or in separating them.
In practice a pair of the coupling members are disposed on opposite sides of the wires to be connected with the wires lying in the channels 6. The coupling members are then clamped upon the wires byblows on the ends thereof which drive the tapered dove-tailed ribs into the coacting grooves firmly clamping them upon the wires or cables. The pull upon the cable does not tend to disengage the coupling members as the pull on one cable is offset or counteracted by the pull on the other. Our improved coupling is very economical to manufacture as the two parts are duplicates and, further, there are no small parts such as bolts or screws to become lost or to manipulate in elevated or other inconvenient positions. Should a workman lose or drop one member any other coupling member of the same size can be utilized.
"We have not attempted to illustrate or point out the various adaptations or. uses of our improved coupling as it is believed that the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which our invention relates to embody or adaptthe same as may be desired.
Having thus described the invention,
what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A rod or wire coupling comprising a pair of coacting coupling members, each having an inwardly tapered dovetailed rib at oneend and an alined inwardly tapered dovetailed slot at the other end, the slot of one member being adapted to receive the rib of the coacting coupling member and each having a longitudinal wire clamping channel at the sides of its rib and groove.
2. A rod or wire coupling comprising a pair of coacting coupling members, each having aninwardly tapered dovetailed rib at one end and an alined inwardly tapered dovetailed slot at the other end, the slot of one member being adapted to receive the rib of the coacting coupling member, said members having opposed surfaces between W-hichthe parts to be joined are clamped.
3. A wire or rod coupling comprising a pair of coacting members, each having an inwardly tapered dove-tailed rib at one end and a longitudinally alined inwardly tapered dove-tailed slot at the other end so thatthe ribsof onemember coact with the slot of the other when tle members are joined by longitudinal movement, said members having opposed longitudinal channels adapted to receive the parts to be joined.
