EMMA BOOBAR, OF MINNEAPOLIS, IVIINNESOTA,
COR$ET WITH ABDOMINAL SUPPORT.
Specification of Letterslatent. Pa ti-ante(l Aug. 29, 1922.
Application filed December 24,1919. Serial No. 347,158.
a combined corset and abdominal support of simple construction and which will be eflicient for the several purposes hereinafter noted.
In this improved corset I obtain'the abdominal support by the addition of but few and simple parts which do not in any sense detract from the corset in itsuse as an on dinary corset.
The improved corset is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view looking at one side of the'corset;
Fig. 2 isa perspective view looking at the front of the corset,
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the corset showing the same spread out flat; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken approximately on the .line 4ciof Fig. 3 showing the parts sectioned separated from each other, and the parts shown being on a larger scale than in the other views.
The body of the corset is, made up of a back section 5 and front sections 6. The back and front sections, at their upper portions, are united, approximately to the waist line, but below the waist line, they are separated so as to provide for adjustment between their adjacent edges, and'such adjustment is provided for by lacings 7 applied to their lower edges, as best shown in Fig 3. The gaps between the separated edges of the front and backsections are adapted to be spanned by inner side tongue flaps 8 eX-' vided at their extended edges with buckles 10. The buckles 10 maybe of any suitable type, but are preferably of the well known frictional type. free from sharp tongues.
The tabs 9 will overlap the spaces between the gaps at the sides of the corset and the buckles 1O engage the ends of strong adjust ing straps 11, the intermediate portions of which are stitched, or otherwise secured to the back of the corset. The upper strap 11 is preferably two or three inches below the waist line, while the lower strap 11 is about three or four inches lower down.
Both the back and the front sections of the corset will, of course be stiffened in the customary way by suitable corset stays, cerporting straps attached to the lower portion of the back and front sections of the corset.
It will be noted byreference particularly to Figs. 1 andZ, that the front corset sections 6 are cupped to lit a fleshy person, but to fit a slender person it will be flattened. The front sections 6 are preferably given considerable increased depth, or. bi "oughtlower down toward the front of the corset, so as to better support fleshy abdomens. 1
This corset can be used for supporting or reducing fleshy abdomens, but is also serviceable for holding in position or replacing various-organs. By tightening of the straps 11, the weight of the abdomen may be supported by said straps and carried from the back of the wearer, without, however, applying the strain to any one part of the back, but, on the contrary, distributing the same throughout the back section of the garment, and hence, over the hips. As the lacing T is below the direct line of strain from the straps, it gives an independent adjustment or gathering of the eXtr me lower portion of the corset and affords means for varying the cupping of the front of the corset. The lacings 7 will be, preferably, strong elastic lacings, so that some elasticity is given to the lower portion of the corset. With the above arrangement, attention is also called to the fact that the abdominal supporting strainis also distributed throughout the 1: 1 members of the corset and is not applied at any one point or on any one line, as would be the case if straps were carried to the front portions of the front sections 6 of the corset. Moreover, the appearance of the front of the corset is not changed or defaced.
To sum up, it may be stated, that this improved corset serves all of the purposes of an ordinary corset, and, in addition thereto, affords an abdominal support, by which abdominal reductions may be made by proper adjustments from time to time, and also, is capable of such adjustments as are required for surgical purposes to hold in position or to assist in repositioning displaced organs.
VVhat I claim is:
1. A corset of the kind described comprising back and front sections connected at their upper portions but with gaps between the edges thereof at the sides of the corset adjacent the bottom thereof, said front sections being separately connected and provided with a lacing at the front of the corset, upper and lower tabs attached directly to the side edges of said front sections and spanning said side gaps and over lapping the side edges of the back section, and upper and lower straps interniediatelv attached to and extended across said back section and adjustably connected to said tabs.
2. A corset of the kind described comprising back and front sections connected at their upper portions but with gaps between the lower edge portions thereof at the sides of the corset, said front sections being separately connected and provided with a lacing at the front of the corset, upper and lower tabs attached directly to the side edges of said front sections and spanning said side gaps and overlapping the side edges of the back section, upper and lower straps i'ntermedia'tely attached to and extent ed across said back section and adjustably connected to said tabs, and lacings connecting the lower side edges of said front and back sections at points below the lower tabs.
3. A corset of the kind described comprising backand front sections connected at their upper portions but with gaps between the edges thereof at the sides of the corset, said front sections being separately connected and provided with a lacing at the front of the corset, upper and lower tabs attached directly to the side edges of said front sections and spanning said side gaps and overlapping the side edges of the back section, upper and lower straps intermediately attached to and extended across said section and adjustably connected to tabs, lacings connecting the lower side edg s of said front and back sections at points below the lower tabs, and hose supporting straps provided at their intermediate portions with hose fasteners and each having an end attached to the lower edge of front section and another edge attached to the lower edge of the back section.
i. A corset of the kind described comprising back and front sections connected at their upper portions but with gaps between the edges thereof at the sides of the corset adjacent the bottom thereof, said front sections being separably connected and provided with a lacing at the front of the corset, upper and lower tabs attached directly to the side edges of said front sections and spanning said side gaps and overlapping the side edges of the back section, upper and lower straps intermediately attached to and extended across said back section and adf connected to said tabs, and tongues l to the rear edges of the front secspanning the said side gaps and-interlapped with the side edges of said back section.
It corset of the kind described comprising back and front sections connected above the waist portion thereof but having gaps therebetween below said waist portion, means adjacent the bottom edges of said sections for adjustably securing the same together, said side sections havinga plurality of tabs secured thereto above said means spanning said gaps, and straps extended across the back section and adapted to have their ends adjustably connected t said tabs. i
In testimony whereof I afhx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
