Description
BYES W.KADEL, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSGNOR TO THE T. E. SYMINGTON' COMPANY, 0F NEVI YORK, N, Y.,
ACORPORATIN OF DELAY/'ARE paarweise-rire.
freenet'.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Bruns W. KABEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new land Auseful improvements in Draft Rigging; and I Vdo hereby declarethe'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledv in the art to which it appertains to makel and use the same.
rlh'e invention relates to draft rigging for railway cars, and more particularly to nnprovements in striking members adapted .tor usewith modern railway equipment.l
The, principal object of my invention, genera'lly considered, is to provide in combination with cheek plates or stop lugs a striking member having a high `degree of elasticity, such striking'member being intimately as` sociated withthe stop lugs to yprovide for the transmission ofblowsi from the coupler to the center-sillsof-the car without detriment to the latter and without injury to the end sill. f
Another object of myl invention is to pro vide cheek plates or draft lugs having shoulders to support and additional shoulders to resist blows impressed upon the striking member'carried by the said stop lugs or cheek plates. n
A still further object of the invention is to provide stop lugs or. cheek plates having associated therewith a striking member, the said striking member being readily detachable and replaceable without cutting. rivets or otherwise dismantling the car construction. 'v
To these and other ends the invention comprises the various elements and combinations of elements as hereinafter sot forth, the novel features whereof are pointed out in the claims.
ln the drawings,-
Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section of a car underframe illustrating my invention, some of the elements being shown in side elevation.
Figure 2 is a transverse horizontal section of the construction shown in Fig. 1, certain of the parts being illustrated in plan. y
Figure 3 is an end .view,'andvFigure 4 a fragmentary view of a portion of one of the cheek plates or stop lugs.
The numeral 1 designates the center or draft sills of a railway car, 2, 2' the forward Specification of Letters Pgwugdgugj 22, 19220 Application filed August 26, 1921; Serial No. 495,635,
endsv of a horizontal yoke, 2a the forward end of a conventional form of cushioning mechanism, the latter being illustrated in dotted lines, and 3 a front follower.
Connected'to the vertical faces ofthe sills 1 and preferably also connected to the top cover plate 4 are spaced stop lugs or check plates 5. Since these cheek plates are identical it will only be necessary for a complete understanding of the invention to describe one of them in detail. The cheek plate 5 is provided with a vertically extending web 6 which abuts 'the adjacent face of the sill 1. it its inner end there is provided an outwardly extending flange 7 which 'forms the followerl engaging face of the cheek plate. llhis `flange 7 is interrupted as at 8 to vprovidespace for the reception of the adjacent yoke arm 2. llt will be observed, however, fromf Filg, 2 thatfthe ange 7, even at the points adjacent the opening 8, projects inwardlyfroinjthefweb 6 to provide a guiding member for the yoke 2. As clearl` shown in l`ig.f2, the cheek plate 5 is provi ed in rear of the "followers engagingfiange 7 with a rearwardly extending web 9, the said rearwardly extending web being adapted to reinforce and strengthen the rearward end of the slot 10 with which the cheek plate is provided. Projecting inwardly from the web 6 and preferably extending longitu dinally of the plate 5 are a plurality of horizontal anges 11, 12, 13 and 14. The flanges 13 and 14 extend thel full length of the cheek plate and are connected at their forward ends bya vertical flange or web 15 which provides means for the connection of the coupler carry iron 16. The flanges 11 and 12 terminate short of the end'of the plate and are connected at their forward ends by a vertical web or flange 17, and extending forwardly from a point adjacent the intersection of the webs 12 and 17 is a further hori- Zontal inwardly extending flange 18. The c-oupler key slot 10 is preferably provided with va marginal ange 19,"and the vertical edges of the flange 7 are also' reinforced by vertically extending webs 20.
The stri-king `block 25 'is seated atv either end on the flanges 18 of each cheek plate and f upper and lower portions of the cheek plates extend through the flanges 29 of kthe center sills affording thereby an additional connection for the said cheek plates.
It might be here pointed out thatby utilizing a Wooden striking block l am enabled to cushion the blows delivered by the coupler horn to a very appreciable extent, and at the same time by providinga cushion for the strikingv horn l also furnish a replaceable striking member which, vin case of damage, may be readily removed by simply unscrewing the nuts 30 from the endsiof the bolts 24.
ln the particular embodiment of the invention here shown it will be observed that the upper flangesy of thel center sills overlie the striking member and thus in connection with the flanges 17 and 18 form an outwardly open pocketfor the reception of this striking member. The endsill 31 is also connected to' the cheek plates 5 by means of some of the rivets 28, and is in turn connected tothe end framing 32'by means of the rivets 33. The
bracing members 341 which extend laterally 'from the outer faces of the center sills are also tied to the said sills by means of the horizontally extending rivets 28.
I claim n 1. ln a draft rigging, the combination with the center sills of a car, of cheek plates connected to the end portions thereof, said cheek plates each being provided with a recess formed by intersecting flanges, and a wooden strikingblock havingits end portions positioned in said recess. K
2. vln a 'draft rigging, the combination with the center sills of a car, of cheek plates connected tov the adjacent faces thereof, said cheek plates eachbeing provided with aseat and a wooden'striking `block extending between said cheek plates and seating thereon, and means for maintaining said block in position; w
3. ln a draft rigging, the combination with the center sills of .a car, of cheek plates connected to the adjacent `facesof said sills, each cheek'plate having a plurality `of=in wardly extending .upright flanges thereon, ,a follower adaptedto bearfagainst one of said flanges on Veach plate, Aand a strikingblock 4adapted to bear against theot'lier flange of each plate, and means extendingbetween said flanges on each plate for reinforcing `the same. y f l l ln testimony whereof I aiiix my s1 mature.
