To all whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the'cou'nty of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multi color-Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in multi-color printing presses in which romore colors in superimposed relation upon sheets, having particular referenceto a type of press shown and'described in Patent No. 1,146,039 dated July 13, 1915, and Patent No. 1,306,086 dated June 10, 1919.
In the press disclosed in the last mentioned patent the sheet to be printed is carried between the printing couples, comprising type cylinders and impression cylinders, by car: rier rings which enclose the latter; In the arrangement. disclosed in this patent the sheet, while being fed between a pairof cylinders, had a tendency to be moved prematurely against the type cylinders by the air set up, the surface of the impression cylinders tending to develop an air pressure by reason of its lack of lateral or circumferential passages or depressions as compared with the type cylinders resulting at times in the smearing or improper printing of the sheet by its beingforced against the type cylinders prematurely.
The present invention has for its main object to prevent this movement of the sheet toward the type cylinders, more specifically the invention having for an object to provide a novel arrangement of suction means for preventing the formation of an air cushion or air pressure which would tend to throw the sheet against the type cylinders. For full comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will beahad to the following description and accompanying drawings, and
to the appended claims in which the various novel features of theinvention are more particularly set forth. 7

In the drawings the bed plate of the press is indicated at 1 and has mounted thereon the front and rear side frames 3. In these frames suitable bearings are provided in which. are journaled for-rotation the two prlnting couples composed of the type or plate cylind'ers and 5-and the impression cylinders 6 and-7 which .areadapted to en gage, for pr1nting action, the impression surfaces of the cylinders 6 and 7 which are conventionally arranged withdraw and filling sheets, to afford means for applying the necessary packing ormakeready.
The work to be printed is advanced by means of a sheetcarrier composed of a pair of toothed carrier-rings 16 (only one of which is shown) the axes. of the four cylinders and the carrier-rings being preferably arranged in one horizontal plane, the car rier-rings being internally toothed and adapted to engage gear-rings at one end of the twoiimpression cylinders. The carrierrings are provided with a series of. crossbraces or sheet'carriers 17 spaced ,equidisa tant thereabout, these cross-braces beingex ternal to the path of the sheet, a sheet support 83 and supporting plates 34 and '35 being orovided forfcarryingflthe sheet from printing couple to printing couple. The sheet is supportechwhile passing under the impression cylinders from one couple to the other, by an arcuate suction'box 36 towhich is connected a pipe" 37 leading. from any suitable suction'd'evice. These parts as thus described are all constructed and operated as fully shown; and described infthe Patent No. 1,306,086 above referred to.
According to the present'invention I provide between the impression cylinder 6 and the adjacent plate 3 1 a suction box 40 which i is preferably of wedge shape to fit between the converging surfaces of the plate and cylinder. T-he outer wall of' this box. may

With this arrangement the air is exhausted fromthe' converging space between the type.andimpression cylinders, While at the same time the direction of the exhaustion of the air is away from the type cylinder so that any tendency of the sheet to be moved toward the type cylinder is prevented.
I may either leave the plate 34 solid as shown in Fig. 1 or may form the portion thereof extending below the pipe with a series of perforations 45, as shown in Fig. With this arrangement the suction acts to keep the sheet in contact with the plate 34 and prevent the same folding over on the type cylinder 4 when the press stops, and as the openings in the plate are closedby the sheet while passing over the latter, the force of the suction exercised at the lower edge of the plate is not diminished.
What I claim is as follows:
1. In a printing press of the type described, co-operating type and impression cylinders, an annular carrier device enclosing the impression cylinder, and a wedge shaped suction box located between said impression cylinder and carrier device, the adj acent edges of the converging side walls of said suction box being spaced apart and forming an air inlet to exhaust the air from. the converging space between said inipres sion cylinder and carrier device.
2. In a printing press of the type described, cooperating type and impression cylinders, an annular carrier device enclosing the impression cylinder, a wedge shaped suction box located between said impression cylinder and carrier device, the adjacent edges of the converging side walls of said suction box being spaced apart to form an air inlet, and a balile device extending from said suction box to a point adjacent said impression cylinder.
3. In a printing press of the type described, co-operating type and impression cylinders, an annular carrier device enclosing the impression cylinder, a wedge shaped suction box located between said impression cylinder and carrier device and having the adjacent edges of the converging side walls thereof spaced apart to form an air inlet, the outer of said side walls being perforated and disposed in the path of saidcarrier device to support the sheet to be printed, and a baiiie device extending from said suction box to a point adjacent said impression cylinder. 1

In a printing press of the type described, co-operating type and impression cylinders, an annular carrier device enclosing the impression cylinder, and a wedge shaped suction box located between said impression cylinder and carrier device and having the adjacent edges of the converging side Walls thereof spaced apart to form an air inlet, the outer of said side walls being perforated and disposed in the path of said carrier device.
5. In a printing press of the type described, co-operating type and impression cylinders, an annular carrier device enclosing the impression cylinder, a segmental plate co-operating with and concentric to said carrier device, a suction box located between said plate and the impression cylinder, and a baflie plate extending from said suction box toward the impression cylinder,
6. In a printing press, co-operating type and impression cylinders, a suction device located between said cylinders and having converging side walls, the adjacent edges thereof being spaced apart and forming an air inlet to exhaust the air from the converging space between said cylinders.

9. In a printing press, co-operating type and impression cylinders, sheet feeding means co-operating with said cylinders, a suction device located between said impression cylinder and'thc sheet feeding means, said suction device includinga support for the sheet, and an air inlet leading into said suction device independently of said support and adapted to withdraw the air from between said impression cylinder and the sheet to be printed.
10. In a printing press, co-operating type and impression cylinders, means for sup porting the sheet in its path of movement, and means for withdrawing the air from between said impression cylinder and said sheet supporting means independently of said supporting means.
