Be it known that I, 'GUSTAF ORsTnoM, a subject of the King ofSweden, residing at Pals-nndsgatan 7. Stockholm, iii the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Devices for Bag or Capsule Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a;folding device for bag making machines of the' type, in which a blank of paper or the like. is wound round a-mandrel, moved in 'an endless path, by two reciprocating folders, between which the said mandrel forces the blank. According to this invention the said machines are provided with presser rollers, which bear against two opposite sides of the mandrel and keep the paper'tight against the same. Preferably, a third-roller co-operates with the said rollers in order to hold the paper- 'blank against the mandrel, while the folding operation is effected. Preferably, rollers are also provided, which after the end flaps of the capsulehave been folded and pasted together actuate simultaneously the said flaps and two sides ofthe capsule, thus rendering sharp theedges of thecapsule.
In the accompanying drawings a paperbag making machine is shown, provided with a folding device arranged in accordance with this invention. F igs. 1 and 2 show the folding device viewed-from two different sides; only such parts of the machine are shown as are necessary for the understanding of the invention. Figs. 3 to 5inclusive show diagrammatically the mode o'f operation of the folding device, while Fig. 6 also shows a folding device for the end flaps of thecapsule and set of pressure rollers for rendering sharp the end edges of the capsule. Figs.
7 and 8 show viewed from one end and from one side respectively presser rollers for rendering sharp the edges of the capsule at the folded end flaps.
1, 1 are the mandrels, round which the paper-blanks are folded. The said mandrels are carried by a disk or by arms fixed to a shaft 2. rotated. in the direction, indicated by the arrow. or to a chain or the like moved in an endless path. The aper-blank 3, provided with paste at suita le parts, is placed by any suitable means on two top folders 4 and 5 and in the position, shown in Fig. 8.

One of the mandrels 1 then movesgdownwards through the space betweenthe. said folders 4; and 5, bringing with itself the of the mandrel and forces the paper 3 againstthe mandrel, as shown in Fig. A, so that it fits snugly to the sides Ofthemandrel. After the paper has been folded round the mandrel 1 in the described manner, ap'resser 8 is forced against the flaps of the paper in order to ensure the pasting together of the said flaps. Thesaid presser 8 partakes in the rotary motionof the mandrel and is then moved from the mandrel in order to permit the capsule formed by the paper to be moved from the. mandrel, after the end flaps have been folded, which may be effected in any suitable mannen I \Vhile the paper is thusfolded round the mandrel by the rollers 6 and 7, the said rollers evidently have no tendency of displacing the paper or moving one of its vertical branches I upward. According to this invention a third roller 9 is provided, which at the .starting of the folding operation has the position, shown in Fig. 3-, and thenholds the paper (i-against the lower side of the mandrel 1, whilethe mandrel moves downwards between'the ro1lers 6 and 7 and the paper is folded. The roller 9 is forced downward by the mandrel, while bearing against its lower side, and after the folding has been finished, the roller 9 moves upwards along the side of the mandrel 1, as shown in Fig. 6. After the mandrel has passed the roller 9, the latter is moved upwards into the position shown in Fig. 3, ready to hold the next paper-blank against the subsequent mandrel, passing be tween the rollers 6 and 7.

Roller 9 is mounted on a pin fixed to an arm 20, pivoted at 21 to the frame of the machine andacted upon 'by'a spring 22 fixed to the said frame. The saidroller 9 forms a very simple device for holding; the paper against the mandrel, 110 card disk or the like being necessary for operating the same:
By means of the said rollers 6, 7 and'l) unobjectionable bagsmay be manufactured.
The-flaps at the one end of the capsule are then folded'and pasted together. Thisis effected for instance by the means shown in Fig. 6. 99 is a stationary tongue. As the capsule ismoved with the mandrel 1the flap at one of the short sides of the capsule is folded by the saidtongue 99. A- second tongue 92 is carried by :a 1 two armed lever 1 15, which is swingable on a pin led-and acted upon by a spring and a cam disk, not shown. As thesaid. tongue 92 is moved toward the left, it folds the flapatthe opposite shortside, of the capsule. The other side-flaps of the capsule-are then folded by stationary'folders 100 and 101, respectively,
1 consisting of plates which are located at opposite sides of the path of the capsule I and the "acting surfa'cesof which successively extend-inwards over the pathof the capsule, so that they bend the flaps of the capsule. The flap last bent inwardsmay be provided-with paste in any suitable main her, for instance as statedin the U. S. Letters-Patent No. 1,879,254, so that'it sticks to "the other flaps, After theend flaps of the capsule have been folded. and pasted togetherthecapsule is subjected to .the actionof three spring actuated presserrollers 165., 166 and 167 in'order to .prooureisharp edges at the end of the capsule. The mandrel 1 with the capsule passes between the said rollers, which then bear against the end .appearance to getfloosejs removed.
The presser rollers 165,166 51 61.16? are also shown in Figures 7 'and'8i "The roller 165 is journalled in a fork .168, the shaft 169 of which is slid'ablv mounted in bearings, one 170 being shown and is actuated by a spring. Rollers 166, 167 are journalled in arms 171, 172,-pivoted to the fork 168 and connected by a spring 178. Suitable abutments limit the movements of the rollers inwards toward one another.
Capsules etc. made in machines arranged asstated above may be used for packing different materials, such as matches, cigarettes'etc. The mandrels 1 and pressers 8 and parts moving the same step by step and'also the top folders 1 land 5 do not belong to the present invention and for that I-claimf I nd any tendency of t he flaps,
