' err-161's ramm- Patented na a, rear Application filed may 12, 1920. Serial No. 38033 T0 at w lac m 2'23 may concern:
Be it known that l, l frnrinmr Sci-renoun- ING, a citizen of Germany, and residing at 89 i ilfredstrasse, Essen-on-the-Ruhr, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of and Devices for Quenching Coke inli arrow Containers (for which l have filed an application in Germany August 21, 1915, Patent Number 298,102, issued March 27, 1917), of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a process of, and a device for, quenching and loading coke, resulting in obtaining a good quenching effect while the coke is preserved during the quenching and loading operation. According to the invention, the cake of coke discharged from the coke oven is received in a container corresponding in its size to the dimensions of the coking chamber. For the reception of the coke the container is turned on one of its narrow side walls, and, thereafter, laid fiat on a broad side wall for the quenching operation. One of its broad walls is preferably pierced to enable the quenching to be effected by a water shower from without. Since in the horizontal position ry large surface and but a small thickness, the quenching is obtained under favourable conditions in a very short space of time and by means of a comparatively small quantity of water. The quenching water may be enabled to rise within the container. The steam developing during quenching is able to quickly escape and will partly be condensed through the action of the quenching shower. Th cake of coke encased in the container is preserved during this treatment.
The discharge of the container may be of fected by means of a rammer or by means of a scraper actuated by traction members. However, the container may be given an oblique disposition, in one direction or another, so that the cake of colre, when the respective narrow side wall is removed, will slide out of its own accord and pass over a screen or a slide way and drop into a railway car, or upon a conveying device. In order to be able to pile the coke within the least space and simultaneously preserve the coke as far as possible, the container may be removed to the storing place by means of a suitable liftlng device and the cakes of coke piled there one upon the other through the opening of a broad. container wall previously removed.
rm r ihe contalner receiving the cake or coke is preferably plvotally or revolubly mounted upon a movable frame, as for instance, upon a frame that is revolubly supported on a carriage.
in the drawings a constructive form of the device is illustrated. Figure l s iows the device in the position in which the calre of coke is being transferred from the coke oven into the device. Figure 2 shows the device during the quenching operation, and Figure 3 after the quenching operation and previously to the loading operation.
The device consists of a platform a have ing two side walls which may be completed to a container by means of the closing doors 3) and 7). In conjunction with the pierced wall 0 and the closing door 5, the platform forms a closed chamber which is open towards the coke oven and adapted to receive the cake of colre in unbroken condition. The turning of the cake of coke for approximately 90 degrees may be effected by means of a motor or manually, by rolling the platform upon the rolls 6. T he revolution of the chamber may obviously be carried out in any other manner. 7 designates the discharge branch for the spent quenching water and adapted to be shut. g is the 'movable carria e upon which the device may be transf ed to any place in front of the battery of ovens. h is the conduit for the quenching water, and 2' a screenor a slide way for loading purposes.
The mode of operation is as follows: The
platform placed upright and open towards the side of'the ovens, is moved in front of the oven and. the cake of coke is pressed into the same. Thereupon the platform is turned into a horizontal position, closed by means of the closing door 6, and charged with quenching water by means of the showerinp; pipe it, until the colre mass is completely quenched. The removal of the quenching water not evaporated is effected through the discharge 7 by inclining the platform somewhat after opening the discharge f in order to obtain the fall required for the discharge. The spent quenching water is either allowed to run to waste or is pumped into a suitable storing vessel to be reused.
