L. R. SIEGEL;

LOUIS R. SIEGEL, or CLEVELAND, orrro.
DENTAL cnown REMOVER.
Removers, ofwhich the following is a speci fication. I
This invention relates to dental crown removers, and has for its object to provide an .improved tool of this type, which can be used to pull off a crown.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a tool the use of which will not be attended with the usual difficulty in applying the pulling force at an angle, as when crowns are to be removed from back teeth. Therefore the present invention has a handle and operating shaft provided with universal joints, which permits the gripping jaws to be applied at the proper angle to the crown, while the operating handle extends out of the mouth in a convenient position for manipulation without discomfort to the patient.
The device will be more fully understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a side elevation of the tool. Fig. 2 is a front end view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a section on-the line i--t of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail in plan.
In the drawings, 6 indicates a cupped head to which is fixed a tube 7 the rear end of which has a socket 8 which receives a hollow ball 9 at the end of a tubular handle 10 the ball and socket joint permitting the handle to extend at various angles to the head. In the handle is a shaft 11 which is carried at one end in a bearing 12 at the rear'end of the handle and is provided with a knurled end piece or knob 13 whereby the shaft may be turned. shaft has a universal joint at 14 with an inner shaft section 15 mounted in a bearing 16 in the tube 7 and carrying at its front end a pinion 17 which meshes with a gear nut 18 confined in the head 6 and mounted on a screw pin 19 which is movable up and down through the head and has a pin 20 at its lower end adapted to fit through hole provided in the crown 21, against the face of the tooth 22. V
The head carries a pair of jaws 28, oppositely located to engage opposite edges of the crown, these jawsbeing connected to The front end of the Specification Letters Patent. jj igntefl ang: 1,; 1%)?523 Application filed October 18, 1921. Serial No. 508,526.
lugs 24: on'the sides of the head by pivoted links 25 whereby the jaws can be adjusted to various positions.
In use, the head carrying the jaws can be placed in the mouth, with the jaws engaging under the edge of the crown, as shown in Fig. 4. Then by turning the knob 13 the shaft is rotated and the screw 19 travels in the nut 18 thereby exerting a lifting force to remove the crown; The universal joints in the casing and shaft permit the handle to extend at any convenient or desired angle,
the handle projecting from the mouth for outside manipulation. This avoids many of the objections incident to operation of a crown remover in the mouth of a patient, and enables the operation to be quickly and easily performed.
I claim:
1. A crown remover comprising a head provided with jaws to grip a crown, a nonrotatable screw carried by the head and adapted to rest against the tooth, a nut rotatable on the screw, within the head, and an operating device for rotating the nut, said device extending at an angle to the axis of the screw, and including a shaft with a universal joint.
2. A dental crown remover comprising a head provided with pulling devices includ ing a non-rotatable screw and a nut rotatable thereon, a handle connected to the head and a shaft within the handle and geared to the nut said handle and shaft having universal joints whereby the handle can extend at various angles to the head.
3. A dental crown remover comprising a hollow head, a screw extending through the same, jaws connected to the head, a nut on the screw in the head, a hollow handle hav-' ing a universal joint connection to the head, and a shaft extending through the handle and geared to the nut, said shaft having a universal joint.
4. A dental crown remover comprising a hollow head provided with jaws, a screw extending at an angle through the head and between the jaws, a nut on the screw in the head, a shaft geared to the nut and pro vided with a universal joint, and a hollow handle enclosing the shaft and having a flexible connection to the head.
5. A dental crown remover comprising a hollow head, provided with opposite jaws, a screw extending through the head and between the jaws, a nut confined in the head e fiexi ble shaft extending; throughthehoh be turned.
and engaging the screw, a hollow handle In testimony whereof, I affix my signw hevlng a fiemble eonnectmn to the head, and ture 1n presence of two wltnesses.
H t 1 low handle, and provided at its front end L LOUIS G with a gear meshing With the nut andat its Witnesses: I rear end with a fingerpiece whereby it may DELLA Sc LEssINGER,
