Application filed January 28, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. MANNING, citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved legging and has as one of its n'incipal objects to provide an article of this character which will be adapted to serve all the ordinary purposes of a legging of conventional construction but which will also embody means to assist the wearer in the act of swimming or in fording streams.
The invention has as a further object to provide a legging particularly adapted for army use.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a legging which while being particularly adapted for army use, may also be employed by bathers or those in the life saving service.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a legging which will be simple in its construction and which may be economically produced.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved legging applied,
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the device detached,
Figure 3 is a sectional view partici'ilarly showing the water pocket flap of the legging, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view showing a slight modification of the invention.
In carrying the invention into effect, I employ a legging body 10. This legging body may be constructed of fabric or other approved material and is split at one side thereof, a lacing 11 being provided for socuring the free ends of the legging body together so that the legging may be readily applied. Stitched or otherwise secured to the legging body opposite the split therein is a flap 12 tapered toward its free end and provided with a pair of eyelets 13, the flap coacting with the legging body to provide a water pocket at the adjacent side of the body. Secured in the lower end portion of the legging body at its adjacent side is a pair of similar eyelets 14 and threaded Specification of Letters Patent.

through the eyelets 13 and let is a lace l5 connecting the free end of the flap with the legging body. As will be seen, this construction provides an arrangement whereby, by lengthening or shortening the effective length of the lace, the movement of the free end of the iiap away from the legging body may be varied. As will be perceived, the iia p will normally fold against the legging body so as to be out of the way. The presence of the flap upon the legging will not, therefore, hamper the normal use of the legging. However, when a person wearing a pair of leggings constructed in accordance with the present invention, undertakes to swim, the flaps of the leggings will, as the legs are thrust outwardly in the usual manner, be distended so that the pockets formed by said flaps will fill with water. The resistance thus offered will, as will be appre oiated, enable the person to swim much more readily and with greater speed than would otherwise be the case. Upon forward move ment of the legs, the flaps will, of course, collapse, so that the resistance offered thereby will then be practically negligible.
in Figure 4c of the drawing, I have illus trated a slight modification of the invention wherein a legging body 16 is employed. This legging body corresponds to the legging body 10 of the preferred construction and stitched or otherwise secured thereto is a pair of oppositely disposed flaps 17 These flaps are identical with the flaps 12 of the preferred construction and are secured at their free ends by similar laces 18 so that the flaps will provide a pair of water pockets upon the leggings.
Having thus described the what is claimed as new is:
The combination with a legging, of a flap secured at one end to the side of the legging forming a pocket. the flap being tapered. toward its opposite end, spaced eyelets carried by the smaller free end of the flap, spaced eyelets carried by the legging, and a lace threaded through all of said eyelets connecting the free end. of the flap with the legging and having its ends tied together whereby the effective length of the lace may be varied for varying the movement or" the free end of the flap away from the legging.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
