HYACINTE IWAXENCHS, OF NEW YORK, N. .Z'.
FLEXIBLE METALLIC STRUCTURE.
resents.
Application filed June 4, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HYACINTH MAxENorrs, a subject of the King of Spain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Flexible Metallic Structure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to flexible metallic structures and refers more particularly to structures of this character for jewelry, such as ornamental bracelets, wrist watch bracelets, necklaces, pendants, or the like.
The invention contemplates broadly a flexible metallic structure which consists of a plurality of individual links or elements having concealed means of connection.
The invention further contemplates more specifically a flexible metallic structure designed as an article of jewelry which is composed of a plurality of links or elements having a concealed means of connection, the structure of said links or elements in their manner of assembly being such to permit of a limited flexibility in one direction and precluding bending or flexing of the same in the opposite direction.
A further object in view resides in the provision of a flexible metallic structure designed as an article of jewelry which is of extremely delicate and attractive nature in its appearance, but which is strong and rugged in construction, and which includes a plurality of independent elements connected in such a manner as to permit of interchangeable association of said elements whereby repairs may be readily made in the event of mutilation of any one or more of the elements.
With these and other objects in view, some of which will appear more clearly as the purpose, nature and use of the device is better understood, reference is had to the following specification, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a flexible article of jewelry constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side elevation thereof, parts being broken away and shown in section to illustrate the underlying structure.
Fig. 3 is a greatly enlarged cross sectional Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July Ill, 1922..
Serial No. 475,131.
view taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference the structure consists of a plurality of substantially identically formed links or elements 10 each of which is provided with a central body portion 11 and marginal tubular flanges 12 of rectangular formation in cross section. The elements 10 are designed to be assembled and connected to each other by means of the connecting links 13, the opposite extremities of which are respectively arranged and received by the confronting ends of the openings 1 of the tubular flanges 12 of adjacent elements. Transverse pivot pins 15 are inserted through the extremities and through the side walls of the tubular flanges, the ends thereof being preferably upset or riveted as at 16.
The body portions 11 and flanges 12 of the links 10 constitute a substantially U shaped member in cross sect-ion and the arrangement thus presented provides, when the links or elements are assembled, a flexible structure which is capable of a limited flexibility in one direction, and which operates to prevent flexing in the opposite direction due to the contact of the upper adjacent ends of the body portions. In practice the body portions may be provided with an opening or openings 17 for the reception of precious or semi-preci0us stones set therein for ornamental purposes. The exact shape, design or configuration of the links may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention, and it is to be understood that the right to such variations is reserved.
While there has been illustrated and described 21. single and preferred embodiment of the invention, no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details as it is to be understood that other embodiments covered by and falling within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A flexible metallic structure comprising a plurality of individual members of sub stantially U-shape in cross section, said U- shaped members having longitudinal channels in the legs thereof, and means of connection extending through said channels.
2. A flexible metallic structure constituting an article of jewelry comprising a pluralityof substantially identical elements including a body and marginal depending longitudinal tubular flanges, connecting links having their extremities extending into the confronting ends of the tubular flanges' vo't" ad acent elements and transverse pivot plns v c passing through said tubular fiangesand connecting link extremities.
3. As an article of manufacture,- a flexible metallic structure constituting an article of jewelry comprising a plurality of individual elements of substantially identical construction, each of said members provided with depending longitudinal tnbular rectangular beads, and concealed means for connecting said elements consisting of connecting links having their opposite extremities respectively disposed in the opposed ends of the tubular beads of adjacent elements, and transverse pivot pins extending through said beads and said connecting links.
