Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4,1922.
Application filed. April 16, 1921. Serial No. 461,742.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN H. WAG- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiflin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools of the class generally designated as pliers, an object of the present invention being to provide a pair of pliers which are especially adapted for the insertion and removal of cotter-pins.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character which may be used for handling cotter-pins, nails, wire, and the like of any length, the tool being so constructed that the article handled may extend beyond each end of the gripping jaws.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pair of pliers whose gripping jaws are oifset and provided with a longitudinally extending opening for receiving a cotter-pin tool which includes means for engagement with the eye of the pin, together with means for holding the said engaging means against accidental removal.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illus- V trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure l is a plan view of a tool embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the manner of gripping a cotter-pin,
Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the engagement of the tool with the eye of a cot ter-pin, and
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the tool is illustrated as formed of a pair of pivotally connected members which include handles 1 and 2 and jaws 4 and 5, the latter jaw being a part of the pivoted member which carries the handle 1, while the jaw 4 is carried by the member which includes the handle 2. The pin for pivotally connecting the members together is indicated at 3.
The jaws 4 and 5 are offset as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and this offset portion is provided with openings? and 8 which extend transversely through the jaws and provide gripping noses 4 and 5 arranged upon the jaws 4 and 5 respectively. These noses are provided with longitudinally extending V-shaped grooves in their opposed faces, the said grooves registering when the jaws are closed so as to provide a rectangular opening 6 for the reception of the cotter-pin or other object, the recesses 7 and 8 being designed to receive the head or eye of the pin, as will be clearly understood. The recesses 7 and 8 are disposed longitudinally of the jaws 4 and 5 and extend from the gripping noses to the inner ends of the offset portions of the jaws, so that in handling an unusually long article such as a long pin, nail, wire or the like, its ends may extend beyond each end of the jaws, so that the use of the tool in this respect is unlimited. By offsetting the jaws as shown in the drawings, the latter may be used under conditions not otherwise permissible.
The handles 1 and 2 are of sufficient length to provide proper leverage, and the extremity of the handle 1 is formed with aright-angled extension which is preferably of rounded tapered formation as shown, and is adapted to be received within a notch 11 provided in the extended end 10 of the handle 2. The extremity 9 is designed to be inserted in the eye of a cotter-pin as shown in Fig. 4, and if desired the end 10 of the handle 2 may be closed over the extremity 9 and the pin securely held thereon. This is especially convenient in removing tight or bent pins. In addition, the members are provided with transversely arranged openings 12 and 13, which, when the jaws are closed are out of register. By slightly opening the jaws these openings may be brought into register to provide the cutter. I
The tool is susceptible of various other uses and contains many advantages over tools of this character heretofore manufactured. It issusceptible of various changes in minor details of construction, and the right is therefore reserved to make any and all changes thzit properly fall Within the v scope of the appended claim.
nected members, handles at one end thereof,- and it pair of offset jaws located at the 0posite end said 'aWs havin transverse ar- P 7 J b y ranged openings therethrough and providing inwardly extending gripping noses, and the said openings extending from the gripping noses to the inner ends of the offset to provide an open-ended longitudinally-disposed recess.
