Description

T. SMITH.
Water-Coolers.
Patented August 26, 1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT (Jrrron THOMAS SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,178, dated August 26, 1873; application filed August 4, 1873.
the water-cooler in common'use that pure water or other liquids may be cooled and drawn off for use without the admixture of ice-water and its impurities. The melting of the ice is retarded, so that less ice is consumed, and the cooler arranged so that the cooled liquid may be drawn off to the last drop, being perfectly clear and pure. My invention consists in arranging the receptacle for the liquids as a casing around the ice-chamber of the cooler, providing it with an inclined bottom and a faucet at the lowest point thereof. A feedopening or funnel at the top admits the liquid.
In the drawing, A represents the watercooler, of the usual shape and material. The cooler is divided into three or more partsthe central or ice chamber B; then one or more incasing receptacles, 0, for the water or other liquids to be cooled 5 and, lastly, the outer cas- "ing D, containing the non-conductor. A removable top or cover, E, of the ice-chamber B, allows the filling of the same with ice. The ice-chamber B extends to the bottom of the cooler A. The receptacle 0, with inclined bottom a, is arranged at some convenient distance above the bottom of the cooler and soldered, or otherwise connected, to the ice-cl1amber B. At the lowest point of the inclined bottom a is a grooved indentation, b, and an opening, 01, in the wall of receptacle (J, for the insertion of faucet e, in such a manner that every particle of the liquid may be drawn off without tipping the cooler.
The liquid being cooled by the ice in the ice-chamber, without being in contact with it, is perfectly pure and drinkable, and is filled into the receptacle 0 by the opening or funnel f in the top part of the cover, which is tightly closed by means of a screw'cap, f. The melting of the ice proceeds slower than in the common water-cooler, as not only the outer casing D, but also the liquid in receptacle 0, serves as a non-conductor when thoroughly cooled, so that a saving in the consumption of ice is obtained.
The ice-Water may be drawn through the bottom of the cooler or sidewise by means of a faucet passing out below the inclined bottom (0.
The cleaning of the cooler is greatly simplified by the inclined bottom,as a mere shaking and drawing off through faucet e is sufficient.
Having thus described my invention, I'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcot- In combination with a water-cooler having a central ice-chamber, B, the liquid-receptacle 0 provided with an inclined bottom, a, and indentation b, and having a faucet, e, and opening f, substantially'as and for the purposes described.
