Description

.l G WANDS.
Railroad Cars.
Patented August 19,1873.
Wtumsm: %.m m
STATES JOHN C. WANDS, OF EASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPRO VEMENT IN RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,062, dated August 19, 1873; application filed April 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. WANDS, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Life-Preservin g Attachment for Railroad-Oars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The object of thisinvention is to preserve the lives of brakesmen on railroad-cars; and it consists in the particular means hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
The invention is represented in the drawing by a perspective view. a
In the drawing, A represents the top of a car, on which the brakesman walks and passes from one to another of the train. 13 is a longitudinal strip or foot-piece, having an extension, 1), made to project over the end of car;
and O is a bracket attached at the side of said extension. On the branches 0 c of this bracket is firmly secured a hand-rail, D, that is extended some distance out from car and over the platform.
The application is as follows: The brakesman places his foot upon the prolongation b, slides his hand forward on the rail D, easily spans the intermediate space, and runs no risk of falling between the cars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The foot-piece B and the rail D, raised on a bracket, 0 c 0, applied together upon the top of cars, as and for the purpose described.
JOHN G. VVANDS.
