WILLIAM S. STONE, OF NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOWlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,053, dated August 19, 1873 application filed January 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. STONE, of New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mowing-Machine 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of so much of a mower-frame as will illustrate my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective 'what I claim as new, and desire to secure by view of the tongue-plate or socket.
My frame for mowing-machines is formed of 1 two channeled side plates, A A, and two fiat end bars, B B. The channel-plates A A are grooved out at the ends in which the front and rearbars B Bare placed and firmly secured by rivets, bolts, or other suitable means, so that the top surface will be level, andthe shoulders a a, formed at the same time, assist in bracing the machine. 0 represents the tongue plate or socket, provided with three grooves, b,d, and 6, running at right angles with each other. The groove bis for the front end of one of the sideplates A, the groove (1 for the front bar, and the groove 6 for the tongue. The groove 11 is formed entirely under the others, so that the front and side plates of the frame may be lapped across each other, thereby rendering the machine perfectly braced, so that the gearing cannot be thrown out of line by straining the frame. E represents the shaft for the bevel-wheel H, which shaft is supported in boxes D D attached to the under sides of the channeled side plates A A. Each box D is cast in one piece, with a flange, G, extending outward above, and forming a cover for the spur-pinion f placed on the end of the shaft E, and thus preventing any dirt from falling from the verge of the driving-wheel into the gearing when in motion. The shipping mechanism consists of a shipperfork, I, pivoted under the front frame-plate B with slotted arm J running out at the side of the frame, and compound lever Klpivoted on the shipper-stand L, by means of which the driver can readily throw the machine in and out of gear.

Letters Patent, is-- The tongue-plate 0, provided with the grooves b, d, and e, substantially as and for the purposes herein setforth.
