Description
C. F. SPECER.
Self-Venting Bungs. No." 142,051. mam Augumg,813.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. SPENCER, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-VENTING BUNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,051, dated August 19,1873, application filed March 6, 1873.
' the faucet is opened, to admit air to the barrel in order to discharge the liquid contents, all of which is fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my self-venting bung; Figs. 2 and 3, bottom views, showing the manner of conning the valve in place; Fig. 4, a vertical section of Fig. 3; and, Fig. 5, a detailed view of the metallic seat, the elastic steam -packing valve, and the supporting-staple.
The bung A is provided witha central pass- 4 age or channel extending through the same,
and terminating in a recess, D. In the lower end of the passageC is located a metal tube E, with or without a flange, a, to form a seat' for the valve F. The elastic steam -packing valve F is confined in the recess D by means of a staple, G, the arms b b of which are either smooth or barbed in such a manner as to be in close contact with its seat, whereby that portion of said valve on each side of the staple is drawn downwardly, when the faucet is opened, to admit air to the barrel, and allow the discharge of the liquid; but, when the flow of liquid is cut offthe sides of the valve return in close contact with the seat by means of the pressure of the gas and air in the barrel, aided by the valves own elasticity.
An important and essential feature of my invention consists in making the valve of what is known as steam-packing, so that it will resist the action of steam, and not be aected thereby when the barrels are cleansed after be ing used and returned to the brewery for refilling.
I am aware that a valve has been arranged upon a stem passing through a Ventilating passage, said stern being surrounded by a coiled spring for the purpose of supporting said valve in place but such is not my invention. I dispense with such valve-stem, and also with the spring, which is an important consideration in the cost and construction ct' the bung.
I claim as my invention- The bung A, having the central channel or passage C and recess D, in combination with the elastic steam-packing valve F, secured in position against its seat by the staple G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of February, 1878.
CHAS. F. SPENCER.
