SANDING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS MILLER, a cit-izen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brook: lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanding Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention relates. to sanding machines primarily designed for use with automobiles.
One of the troubles experienced by automobilists is that on wet streets and roads their tires do not take hold, but spin and skid. This is likely to give rise to various kinds of accidents which endanger both lives and property.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a device, that may be used 1n conjunction with vehicles, which may be operated to spill sand in front of or beh nd the wheels so as to create a good gripping surface for the tires.
This and other objects of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description and accom panying drawings.

Referring to the above-mentioned drawings, a container 10 is shown attached to the under side of the platform 11 of the automobile 12. This container has a plurality of openings 13 and 14: cut in its bottom wall.
Fixed to the bottom wall and registering with the openings 13 and 1 1 are a number of threaded collars 15, and leading from the container to the wheels are a number of tubes 16 and 17. The tubes 16 lead from the container to a point just back of and the tubes 17 to a point just in front of each tire. Thus eight tubes and eight openings are provided, four tubes for the purpose of spilling sand in front of the tires and four for spilling it back of the tires. openings 20 and 21. These openings 20 and 21 are arranged in pairs and so spaced in the slide that they may be moved into register with the openings 13 and 14, respectively, in the bottom of the container 10, WlllCll are also arranged in pairs as can be seen in Figure 2. The slide 19 is operated by means of a lever 22 mounted on an axle 23 carried by the bracket 24 which is fixed to the container 10. The lower end of the lever 22 is connected to the slide 19 by means of a connecting rod 25 supported in a guide 26 and a block 27 fixed to the end of the connecting rod 25 and to the slide 19. This block 27 moves in a guideway 28 cut in the bottom of the container 10. The lever 22 extends up through the platform 11 in front of the seat so that it may be easily operated by the driver. A plate 29 is mounted on the platform 11 alongside of the lever 22 and has the words Forward, Reverse and Closed marked thereon. These words are so located on the plate that as the lever is moved to coincide with them it operates the slide to close the openings 13 and 14 or open either group of openings.
Rods 30 extend longitudinally through the container 10 and are carried by its ends. Removably mounted on these rods 30 is a sand box 31. The bottom wall of this sand box is shaped to slope downward towards the centre line and is provided with a plurality of roups 32 of small openings resembling tie top of a pepper shaker. The bottom of the sand box is spaced a certain distance from the slide mounted in the container 10. An opening is cut in one wall of the container 10 and is closed by means of a cap 3 1 which engages with a threaded collar 35 fixed to the container wall and extending about the opening This opening is provided as a means for feeding the sand into the sand box 31. A notch 37 is cut in the wall of the sand box 31 to register with the lower segment of the opening 33 in the container wall.
The operation of this device is as follows:
The sand is fed into the sand box 31 through the opening 33 and as the machine is put in motion the sand shakes through the groups 32 of openings into the container 10. Thus, as the machine is moving along, if it comes to a grade or some other obstruction which causes the wheels to slip on the street or road, the lever 22 is moved to coincide with the word Forward on the plate 29. This throws the openings 20 in the slide 19 into register with the openings 13 in the bottom of the container wall, and sand passes from the container through the tubes 17 and is spilled in front of the tires 18 creating a better gripping surface for them. \Vhen the automobile is being driven backward and meets with an obstruction which causes the tires to slip, the lever 22 is moved to coincide with the word Reverse on. the plate 29, bringing the openings 21 in the slide 19 into register with the openings 14 in the bottom of the container wall, and sand is spilled behind the tires 18. When the'lever 22 is moved to coincide with the word Closed the slide 19 shuts off all entrance to the openings 13 or 14 in the bottom ofthe container.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Claims:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a vehicle sanding machine of the class described, comprising a container having tubes leading therefrom to the vehicle wheels, means for controlling the flow of sand from the container, and a sand box mounted in the container with its bottom spaced above the means for controlling the flow of sand to carry the weight of the sand.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a vehicle sandingmachine of the class described, comprising a container, having tubes leading therefrom to the vehicle wheels, mounted on thevehicle, a slide having a plurality of openings therein that may be moved into register with the tubes located in the container, means for operating the slide to control the flow of the sand from the container, and a sand box having perforations in its bottom removably mounted in the container with the bottom spaced "from said slide so as to carry the ing means leading therefrom to the vehicle wheels, a slide having openings extending therethrough slidably mounted in the bottom of the container-to control the flow of sand into the conveying means, means for operating the slide associated therewith, and a sand box having clusters of perforations in its bottom wall located in the container with the bottom wall spaced from the slide so as to carry the weight of the sand to allow the slide to be moved with greater ease.
4. In combination with a vehicle, a sanding machine comprisin a container mounted on the vehicle, a sand ldox removably mounted in the container and spaced from the bottom, openings in the sand box to allow the sand to pass into the container, means for conveying the sand from the container to spill it either in front of the tires or behind them, and means in conjunction with the container to control the flow of sand into the conveying means.
5. In combination with a vehicle, a sanding machine comprising a container mounted on. the vehicle, a sand box removably mounted in the container and spaced from the bottom, an opening in the side of the container for feeding sand into the sand box, groups of openings in the bottomoit the sand box to allow the sand to pass into the container, tubes connected to the bottom of the con tainer and registering with the openings in the latter for conveying the sand to spill it either in front or behind the tires, a slide having a plurality of openings therein mounted in the container for controlling the flow 01" the sand, and a lever co-operating with the slide to operate the latter.
6. As a new article of manufacture, an automobile sanding machine of the class described comprising a container having a plurality of openings out inthe bottom attached to the automobile, a plurality of tubes connected to the bottom of the container, registering with the openings and leading to a point in frontof and'behind each tire, a sand box removably mounted in the container and spaced from the bottom, groups of openings in the bottom wall of the sand box, a slide having openings out therein mounted. on the bottom of the container, said slide openings being spaced so that they may be moved into register with the tubes leading to a point in front of each tire or with the tubes leading to a point behind each tire, a lever and connecting rod co-operating with the slide to operate the latter, and a plate mounted adjacent the lever to indicate how the machine is operating.
