Be it known that I, Vi ALrnn Eynnn'r'r liionms, a citizen oi? the United tates of America, residing in London, England, have invented a certain new and useful 11pparatus tor lying i-kdhcsives filternately to Both F aces ct Sheets of Paper or the like. For which I have tiled applications in Belgium, Dec. 1-, 1920, 559. No. 2341,0123; l rance, Dec. 8, 1920, tier. No. 157.192; England, Dec. 18, 1914, Patent No. 2 1,306, and Germany, Dec. 18,1t13, Patent No. 321,498, and of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object apparatus tor applying adhesives alternately to both 'laces of sheets 01? paper or the like.
Sheets of paper or the like so gummed are particularly adapted tor use in forming packets for cigarettes and other articles, since when folded the gummed portions of the sheets enable the inner folds oi the packet to be secured to the outer folds forming a stronger packet.
The method resides in feeding the sheet in a guide and simultaneously, by imparting a suitable movement to this guide. bringing the sheet against one or other of the adhesive applying devices arranged on both sides of the guide.
The apparatus tor carrying the method into practice consists of two adhesive applying rollers arranged at intervals between which a displaceable sheet guide is mounted.
The invention is illustrated by way oi example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figs. 1 and 2 show the apparatus in side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of a detail. Fig. 41 is a plan view ot a portion of the apparatus showing the upper gumming rollers in position. over the sheet and the position of the sheet guide. Fig. 5 is an end elevation partly in section.
A stack of sheets of paper rests in the receptacle 1 and the lowermost sheet of the stack is turned down by a sheet-withdrawing device 2 and conducted to a conveyor roller 17 against which the roller 3, secured to the arm 20, presses from time to time. The guide a for the sheet of paper or the like which seizes its lateral edges is arranged in front of the conveyor roller 17.
This sheet guide is mounted on a bracket which has a depending portion 51 pivoted at G and carries a roller 5 bearing againstacani plate 12 mounted on the shaft 19. The guide has cutout portions 52 exposing the sheet to two sets'of rollers 8, 9, at these points 4) said rollers being located at a certain distance one from the other the upper roller 8 of each set being provided with adhesive from the adhesive reservoir 10. Between these sets of rollers the'conveyor rollers 7 for the sheets are arranged.
The lower adhesive rollers 9 are mounted on a two-armed pivoted lever frame 11 which, on its pivot, carries an arm lalon the end of which a roller 15 is mounted. On the free end of the twoarmed lever 11 a spring 16 is arranged, a cam plate 13 is secured to the shaft 19 and a roller 15 on the lever 14 bears against this cam.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows :The device 2 seizes a sheet of the stack contained in the supply receptacle 1 and carries it to the conveyor roller 17 against which it is pressed by the roller 3 which is mounted on the arm 20. This arm 20 is rigidly connected with the cam plates 12 and 13. The sheet fed by the rollers 17 and 3 reaches the guide 4-, whose roller 5 res-ts upon the cam-plate 12. Then the lever 20 and the roller move retractively, the roller 5 runs upon the cam plate 12. This plate 12 is shaped in such a manner that the guide member 4 and the sheet guided in it are alternately given an upward and a downward movement during the forward displacement of the sheet.
Owing to this movement, the sheet is alternately brought into contact with the upper adhesive rollers 8 and the lower adhesive rollers 9 at the points 52. In the meantime the sheet of paper or the like is fed by the two conveyor rollers 7. When the sheet has been coated on its edges with adhesive on both itaces alternately in this manner, the arm 20 with the roller 3 again moves forward, and the roller presses a sheet taken by the d e 2 from the stack on to the conveyor roller 17. The cam plate 13 connected with the arm 20 moves forward and its recess 18 comes in front of the roller 15 on the arm 14L. By means of the spring 16 this roller is pressed into the recess 18 and thereby moves the arm 11 upwards so that the lower adhesive rollers 9 mounted upon the aim press against the upper adhesive rollers 8 from which they take adhesive. The upper rollers receive the adhesive directly from the adhesive reservoir 10.
When the sheet has been fed so that it is seized by the rollers 7 the same operation repeated.
Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical efiect, I claim 1. In an adhesive applying apparatus in combination, a pair of adhesive applying elements, means for passing a sheet of material between the elements, and means for holding the sheet successively against each element.
2. In an adhesive applying apparatus in combination, a pair of adhesive applying elements, means for passing a sheet of material adjacent each element, and means for holding one face of the sheet against one element during a period of its passage and for holding the other face of the sheet against the other element during another period of its passage.
3. In an adhesive applying apparatus in combination, a pair of oppositely disposed adhesive applying elements, means for pass ing a sheet of material betweenthe elements and means for holding the sheet successively against each element.
4. In an adhesive applying apparatus in combination, a pair of adhesive applying rolls, means for feeding a sheet of material between the rolls, a guide for said sheet disposed between the axes of the rolls and means for moving the guide transversely to the sheet to hold the sheet successively against each roll.
5.. In an adhesive applying apparatus, in combination, a pair of adhesive applying rolls, means for passing successive sheets of material between the rolls, means for holding the rolls apart while a sheet is passing between them and for holding the rolls together in the interval between sheets, an adhesive reservoir for supplying one roll, and means for guiding a sheet successively against each roll. 7
6. In an adhesive applying apparatus in combination, a holder for sheets of material, a pair of adhesive applying elements, a guide extending adjacent each element, means for feeding successive sheets from the holder into the guide, means for feeding sheets in the guide and between the adhesive applying elements, and means for reciprocating the guide transversely to the direction of motion of the sheet.
7. In an adhesive applying apparatus a holder for sheets of material, a pair of adhesive applying rolls, a sheet guide extending between the axes of the rolls, means for feeding successive sheets from the holder into the guide, means for feeding a sheet in the guide and between the rolls, means for reciprocating the guide transversely to the direction of motion to the sheet and means for holding the rolls apart during the passage of a sheet and for holding the rolls together in the interval between successive sheets.
8. In an adhesive applying apparatus an adhesive applying roll, a second adhesive applying roll movably mounted adjacent to the first roll, a guide for a sheet of material, means for feeding the sheet between the rolls, a pair of cams, means for operating the cams simultaneously, one of said cams being adapted to move the second roll toward and away from the first roll and the other cam being adapted to move the guide transversely to the direction of motion of the sheet.
