Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI T. SCOFIELD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 141,893, dated August 19, 1873 application led J une 23, 1873.
'To all whom' t may concern:
Beit known that I, LEVI T. ScoFiELD, of Cleveland, in Jthe county of Cuyahoga, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Connecting Stationary Pipes (that are 110W usually connected With ange connections) by the use of a screw-coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, as follows:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a perspective View.
The letters A and E, in both the section and the perspective View, are portions of a line of pipe. B is a long tapering coupling diminishing in size from g to h. D is a common coupling. C is a screw-coupling tapering from left to right with the threads in the middle turned off, so that it can be turned with tongs. The end j of the screw U is entered at the point g `of the coupling B, and screwed in until the coupling B can be screwed firmly to the pipe A. The tongs are then applied to C and made to enter the coupling D (which is already irmly secured to the pipe E) and turned until it becomes tight at the points h and fi.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a screW- coupling in two parts to be used in connection with common couplings to connect stationary lines of pipe, and by making a tight screw -joint to prevent the leaks that frequently occur when iiange connections with a :llexible packing are used, Which is liable to dissolve and Work out by the action of steam, petroleum, gas, ctc.
I do not claim any improvement on the pipes A and E on the common coupling D; nor do I claim that this is an original invention; but
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the tWo parts B and C With the parts A D E, substantially as described.
