Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
JOSEPH WILOOX, OF CANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPUNGS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,846, dated August 12,1873; application filed February 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WILoox, of Canton, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cary-Coupling, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full1 clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a ear-coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my car-coupling, showing one of the draw-heads in longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of one of the draw-heads.
My car-coupling is simple 5 and consists merely in the application of three springs and a tube to an ordinary draw-head, with the usual pin and link, and can readily be attached to any draw-head now in use, the object being to make the same self-coupling, and to hold the link in proper position fbrcoupling.
A A represent two draw-hads of any of the known and usual forms. B B are the coupling-pins, and O is the coupling-link. In each draw-head A are two springs, D D, fastened one to each side of the mouth or entrance of the draw-head, and extending toward the rear. The front portions of the springs D D are slightly curved, as shown in Fig. 2, while the rear portions are straight; and along the upper edge of each of said straight parts is an inward-projecting flange, a. In the top of the mouth of the draw-head is fastened another spring, E, which extends inward and downward, as shown more particularly in Figpresses the inner ends of the springs D Dv apart, till the flanges a a become so far separated that the pin B will fall down of its own weight and couple. The spring E holds the link O in a horizontal position, so that it will enter the opposite draw-head without being guided, as usual, by hand, thus doing away with one of the most fruitful sources of accidents in coupling cars.
Having thus fully described my invention, i.
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters fatent, is-
-The spring E, attached to the front part of the draw-head, extending -backward andwresting upon the link O, in combination with the springs D D, having anges a a, and pin B, all constructed and arranged for operation as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH WILCOX.
Witnesses C. STooKwELL, R. M. MANLY.
