Description

W. R. KAHNS. ELECTRIC CANDLE LIGHTING FIXTURE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 20, 1921;
Patented May 23, 19212.
WALTER R. KAHNS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YOR K, ASSIGNOR TO 3. H. WHITE MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
arissa;
T0 ail whom it blag concern Be it known that I,'-WAL'rnR R. K HNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of invented an Improvement in Electric-Carr tile-Lighting Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lighting fixtures of the electric candle type, in which a socket for the lamp is supported within a vertical tube which is usually of'metal provided with an exterior ivory finish giving a candle ef-.
feet.
In fixtures of this character, various" lengths of tubes are employed, rendering it necessary to employ socket supports of different lengths according to the length of the tubes, so. that the lamp sockets may be properly positioned. One object of my present invention is to provide an adjustable support for the lamp sockets, so that they may be readily adjusted for use with tubes of different lengths, and another object is to provide a secure connection of the support to the socket, so that there will be no liability of the socket becoming loose, or accidentally separated from its support.
, The details of the invention are hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1, is a sectional elevation taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2, is a view partly in section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, the lower shells and supporting tube being omitted.
Fig. 3, is an inverted plan of a socket, showing a modified form in the attachment of its support, and
Fig. 4, is a top view of one member of the socket support in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar reference characters denote like parts throughout the several views.
10, indicates a candle tube, which is preferably of metal having an exterior ivory finish. I
The lower end of this tube rests upon an annular shoulder 11, upon a shell 12, pro? vided with a central opening in its bottom, through which extends the threaded end 13 of a tube or pipe 14, extending from a chandelier, wall bracket, or other fixture suport.
p A cup-shaped shell 15, is preferably em- ELECTRIC-CANDLE-LTGHTING FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent. p t m May 3, 922; Application filer; April 20, 1921 Serial 'No. 462,789.
' ployed to cover the shell 12, which shall 15 is also provided with a central opening in its bot-tom for the passage of the't-hreaded h end of the pipe 14. This shell or cup 15, adlxings, city and States of New York, have jacent its top is inturned and upwardly curved as at 1t, leaving an opening of a size to fit snugly over and around the upper part of the shell 12, and thereby entirely cover said shell.
I also prefer to provide a top member 17, having a general appearance to that of the top of an old fashioned candle stick, formed of one piece of sheet meta and provided with a central opening forming a collar of a size to fit snugly over and around the candle tube 10. The upper part of this member'17 is flared and its outer edge overturned which strengthens it and adds to the artistic appearance of the fixture. The bottom of this member fits within'the top of the shell 15, and rests upon the top edge. of the shell 12.
18, denotes the lamp socket for receiving and holding the electric lamp 19.
A cylindrical cover 20, 01: insulating material surrounds the socket 18 to prevent contact of the socket shell with the tube 10.
It will be apparent that it is necessary for the socket 18, to be positioned in the upper part of the tube 10, and the provision of an adjustable support for the socket, whereby it may be raised or lowered to accommodate its position in candle tubes of various lengths, forms the principal feature of my present invention; the attachment of the support to the socket being also an important feature.
The adjustable support for the socket, comprises two members 21 and 22, preferably fiat strips of brass or other metal, although the may be made of any suitable material. T e member 21, is provided with a central longitudinal slot 23; there being a threaded hole in one end of the member 22, to receive a set screw 24, which passes through the slot 23, in the member 21, whereby the two members 21 and 22, are slidably connected, and may be held in any desired longitudinal adjustment, by tightening said screw. In order to form a guide for the member 22, and relieve the set screw from undue strain, I provide a clip 25, on one end of the member 21, through which the member 22, passes. This clip is preferably t'ormed by making right angle arms on opposite sides of the member 21, at this end, and bending said arms over towards each other on one side of the member 21. The free end of the member 22, is bent at right angles and has formed thereon an interiorly threaded stud 26, which is screwed upon the threaded end 13, of the tube 14, above the shells 13, and 15, thereby securing said shells to the supporting arm or pipe 14, the candle tube 10, being held in the desired relativ position by said shells in the manner before described. t
The upper end of the member 21, also has a right angle extension 27, bent in the same direction as the bend on the free end of the member 22, for connection with the lamp socket 18. While this bent portion 27, of the member 21,"may be of the same width as the vertical portion of said member, and be secured to the porcelain base of the socket within a recess 28, therein and by a screw 29, passing through a central vertical hole in the socket base and into a threaded hole in the bend 27 as shown in Fig. 3, I prefer to provide a right angle arm 30, on each side of said angle portion 27, the free end of each of said arms being provided with a hole for the passage of a screw 31, each of said screws also passing through a hole in the porcelain base of the socket, and having a nut 32, screwed upon their upper ends, whereby the socket 18, is more securely fastened to the member 21, of the adjustable support.
It is also preferable that the angle piece 27 with its integral arms 30, be seated within a recess or recesses of like shape provided in the base of the socket as shown in Fig. 1.
' As a means for holding the insulating cover 20, in proper position to the socket 18,
I provide on each side of the bottom of the socket base a clip 33, formed of fiat pieces of sheet metal bent over and slightly inwardly at a predetermined point to form projections 34, upon which the bottom of the cover 20 rests. These clips 33, extend vertically a predetermined distance above said projections 34, and adjacent their upper ends are each provided with a spur formed by pressing out a portion of the metal in substantially triangular shape, the cover 20, being provided adjacent its lower end with triangular openings 36 into which said spurs 35, extend when the cover 20, is
properly placed over the socket 18, there being sufficient spring or resiliency in the clips to allow the cover to be turned down over the socket until it strikes the projections 34, when the spurs 35, are brought into register with said openings and spring outwardly and into the same.
The other ends of the clips 33, which extend horizontally are passed under the arms 30, and are held to the socket base by the screws 31, which pass through holes in such ends of the clips. 7
I claim as my invention:- 1
In an electric lighting fixture, the com bination of a vertical cylinder, a lamp socket within th same, a cover of insulating material surrounding the socket shell and provided with openings in its opposite sides adjacent its lower end, a cup upon which the lower end of said cylinder rests, a shell surrounding said cup, a supporting farm having a threaded end extending through alined openings in the bottom of said shell and cup, a support for said socket comprising two members adjustably connected together, a threaded stud carried upon one end of one of said members for connection with the threaded end of said arm, the free end of the other member beingiprovided with a right angle extension, clips upon opposite sides of the socket each provided .with a spur engaging the openings in said insulating cover, and screws for securing said clips and said extension to the socket.
Signed by me this 24th day of March,
WALTER R. KAHNS.
