Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 28, 1920. Serial No. 406,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CrmRLns J. GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Winding Device for Motors of Talking and Other Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel manner f winding the spring or springs of a spring motor adapted to rotate the record table or platform of a talking machine, but serviceable for other purposes, and it consists of a strap band, rope, cord, or other pliable or flexible member adapted to operate the shaft of the motor to effect such winding by draft on said member, and means for automatically restoring said member to its normal coiled condition ready for further operation.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and soit is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the inven- Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of a winding device for a motor of a talking machine embodying my invention.

Referring to the drawings.
1 designates the casing of what is known as a spring motor which as well known consists of springs which are connected with the winding shaft 2 thereof, the latter bemg mounted on the side walls of said casing and having connected with its outer end the spur wheel 3 with which gears the pinion 1, the latter being mounted on the horizontal shaft 5 whose bearings are on the casing 1. On said shaft opposite to said pinion at 13 the bevel wheel 6 which meshes with the bevel wheel 7, the latter being mounted on the vertical shaft 8 whose bearings are on the casing 1, and whose. upper end passes through the top 9 of the cabinet or casing 10 of a talking machine and has secured to it the record table or platform 11 of said machine.
The shaft 2 has connected with it laterally the shaft12, the same being mounted on the adjacent side wall 13 of the cabinet and the hanger 14 depending from the top 9 of the cabinet.
15 designates a barrel adapted to carry the strap 16 of pliable material, or in lieu thereof, a rope, chain or band, of similar nature, the said barrel having a central bushing or hub 17 which freely encircles the shaft 12 and forms the means of mountmg the barrel freely on said shaft. On one side of the barrel is the toothed or ratchet wheel 18 which is keyed or otherwise secured firmly to the shaft 12, the teeth of said wheel being adapted to be engaged by the spring pressed pawl or dog 19 which is pivotally' connected with the side of the barrel 15 and adapted to rotate with the latter.
Connected with the barrel 15 and with a bracket on a proper portion of the cabinet 10 is the coiled spring 1 1 which is adapted to be wound on and be unwound from the shaft 12.
It will beseen that when the strap 16 is drawn-out, it is unwound and so rotates the barrel 15, the bushing 17 and the pawl 19. The latter communicates rotary motion to the toothed wheel 18 and consequently to the shaft 2 whereby the springs of the motor are wound up, their unwinding as usual in motors of the class causing rotation of the wheels 3 and 1, the shaft 5, the pinions (5 and 7, and the shaft 8, whereby the table or platform 11 is operated, the effect of which in talking machines is evident.
As the shaft 12 rotates it causes the coiling of the spring 1 1. Then when the unwound strap is let go, said spring 14' causes the barrel to rotate, and pawl 19 then riding free over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 18,
and so the strap is rewound on the barrel ready to be unwound for further winding of the spring or springs of the motor, said rewinding of the strap having been automatic.
In order to retain the barrel in position on the shaft 12 and steady in its motion, the periphery of said shaft within the bushing 17 has thereon the circumferential groove 20 into which freely enters the point of the screw or pin 21 which is connected with the surrounding portion of the bushing 0r hub 17 without interfering with the rotation of the shaft 12, the said bushing and the barrel.
The shaft 12 is connected with the shaft 2 by a collar forming the coupling 22 which admits of the removal of the former from the latter, and so acrank handle may be fitted in said collar to rotate the shaft 2 by the same to effect the winding of the springs of the motor by hand instead of to the strap 16.
While the strap 16 may be drawn out by hand it ma 1 be aided around the roller 28 on the top of the cabinet 10 and passed through an opening 23* in said top and connected with the lid 2-1 of the cabinet so that by raising said lid the strap may be unwound from the barrel and so cause the operation of themotor shaft each time that said lid is so raised.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a spring motor of a character stated, a winding shaft for said motor, a toothed wheel 011 said shaft connected stationarily therewith, a flexible member, a carrier for the latter mounted freely on said shaft adapted to have said flexible member wound thereon and rewound therefrom, a pawl-like member on said carrier adapted to engage the teeth of said wheel and interlock said carrier with said shaft in one direction of rotation of the latter, and an auxiliary spring at one side of and attached to said carrier and connected with a casing and with said carrier whereby when said flexible member is unwound said auxiliary springis adapted to cause automatically the rewinding of said flexible member.
2. In a spring motor of a character stated, a winding shaft of said motor, a flexible member adapted to cause the winding of the spring motor, a carrier for said member on which the latter may be wound and from which it may be unwound, said carrier having its hub portion mounted freely on said shaft, a toothed wheel on said shaft stationarily connected therewith, a pawl-like member on said carrier engageable with the teeth of said wheel to interlock said carrier with said shaft in one direction ofrotation of the latter, and an auxiliary spring at one side of and independent of the motor and connected with said carrier and a casing adapted when said flexible member is unwound to rewind the latter automatically on said carrier.
