BUTCHERING STAND.
Application filed February 23, 1922 Serial No. 538,599.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat l, CrrAnLns l l. DUKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Murphysboro, in the county of Jackson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butcherino Stands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to butchering stands, and has for its object to provide a stand which greatly facilitates the butchering operation, particularly that of swine by facilitating the handling of the animal.
It is another object of the invention to provide a butchering stand of this character including a movable hanger from which the body of the animal is suspended, the body being applied to the hanger when the same is in a horizontal position, when the animal is disposed substantially parallel to the base of the stand.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a butchering stand of this character including a movable gallows-frame from which the body of the animal is suspended after the frame is disposed in angular relation to the base.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide a butchering stand of this character including a movable gallows-frame, means carried by the stand for holding said frame in its raised position.
VVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of partsto be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a butchering stand constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation, showing the gallows-frame in itsextended position; and
Figure 3 is a side elevation, showing the gallows-frame in its lowered or folded position.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the base of the stand, which may be made of any suitable structure, either solid or constructed as a frame. For the purpose of illustration the base is shown asa frame including side members 6 and 7 and end members 8 and 9.
In connection with the base 5, a movable gallows-frame is provided, said frame comprising spaced standards 10 and 11 and a top'cross piece 12, the standards 10 and 11 inclining or converging from the base of the standard to their upper ends, said upper ends being beveled for engagement with the cross piece 12. Suitable braces 13 are disposed at the top of the gallows-frame for the purpose of rendering the same substantial. The distance between the standards 10 and 11 at their lowerends substantially corresponds to the width of the base 5, one side face of each standard being connectedto the base 5 by means of hinges 1-l whereby the entire frame may be swung toward and in parallel relation to the base when desired. It will be noted that each of the standards 10 and 11 is substantially rectangular in cross section, so that their lower ends substantially form feet which serve to support the frame in its raised or vertical position, the hinges l l being connected to one side of each standard. Depending from the cross piece 12 is a hook 15. it is of course obvious that two or more hooks may be applied according to the number of animals it is desired to suspend from the frame. The hook 15 is intended to support a hanger 16, said hanger having hooks 17 depending from its ends and adapted to receive the legs of the animal.
Secured to the base or side members 6 and 7 in spaced relation to each other are standards or posts 18, said standards being considerably shorter than the standards 10 and 11. Each standard has projecting from its face 19 a stop 20, said stop being positloned ad acent the upper end of the post.
Carried by each of the standards 10 and 11 remote from the post 18, are brackets 21, each bracket being adapted to receive a hasp member 22, preferably consisting of a rod formed into a rectangular frame and pivoted within the brackets, said hasp member being adapted to extend over the upper ends of the standards 18 so as to connect the frame to the standards and maintain the frame in its raised position indefinitely. The purpose of the stops 20 is to limit downward movement of the hasp members 22.
Pivoted to the standard 11 above the hasp member of said standard, is a substantially longitudinally bowed bar- 23, the free end of the bar being notched as at 24c and adapted to engage a lug 25 which projects from the standard 10, a suitable keeper 26 being car ried by the standard 10, the free end of the keeper extending over the lug 25 whereby the bar is maintained in its proper position laterally of the frame. The purpose of the bar is to prevent unnecessary movement of the body of the animal when the frame is being moved to its vertical position, and also to steady the body of the animal during the butchering operation.
In operation, when it is desired to butcher the body of one or more animals, the gallows-frame is swung downwardly substantially parallel to the base 5 through the me dium of the hinges 14 and the body of the animal laid within the frame, the feet of the animal being connected to the end of the hanger. The bar 23 is then engaged with the lug 25 whereupon the gallows-frame will be raised to a vertical position. There is no danger of the frame being wren'ched from thebase, in view of its weight, in view of the posts 18 which serve as stops to limit movement of the frame to a vertical position, and further provide means for holding the gallows-frame in its vertical position when the hasp members 22 are swung over the top of the posts and into engagement with the stops 20. When the frame is disposed in its vertical position the hinges 14: substantially cooperate with the posts 18 and hasp members 22 to firmly secure the gallows frame in its raised position, rendering movement of the frame relative to the base practically impossible, so that the butchering operation will proceed without difficulty.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel from of butchering stand which permits the body of an animal to be suspended from a gallows-- frame without the use of pulleys and ropes,
the construction of the frame being such that it may be readily raised by one person and locked firmly in position, and it is simple in construction, well. as si'lbstantial, it will last indefinitely.
What is claimed is 1. A butchering stand of the character described comprising a base, a frame movably connected tothe base, means carried by the frame for supporting an animal, and means carried bv the frame and operatively connected to the base to prevent movement of said frame relative to the base.
2. A butchering stand of the character described comprising a base, a frame movably connected at one end to the base and adapted to be swung toward and away from the base, means carried by the opposite end of the frame for supporting the body of an animal, and means carried by the base adjacent the connected ends of the frame to the base for limiting movement of the frame in one direction.
3. A butchering stand of the character described comprising a base, a frame movably connected at one end to the base and adapted to be swung toward and away from the base, means carried by the opposite end of the frame for supporting the body of an animal, means carried by the base adjacent the connected ends of the frame to the base for limiting movement of the frame in one direction, and means carried by the frame and engaged with the last mentioned means for preventing movement of the frame relative to the base. I
4. A butchering stand comprising a base, a gallows-frame located upon the base, hinges carried by one side portion of the standards of the frame, said hinges being also connected to the base whereby the frame may be swung toward and away from the base, stop means carried by the base adjacent the opposite side portion of the standards of the frame, and means carried by said standards and operatively connected to said stop means for mounting the frame in angular relation to the base. i
5. A butchering stand comprising a base, a gallows-frame located upon the base, hinges carried by one side portion of the standard of the frame, said hinges being also connected to the base, stop means car ried by the base adjacent the opposite side portion of the standards of the frame, means carried by the standards and operatively connected to said stop means for mounting the frame in angular relation to the base, said stop means cooperating with the hinges of the frame to prevent damage to the hinges upon application of weight to the frame.
(3. A butchering stand comprising a base, a gallowsframe located upon the base, hinges carried by one side portion of the standards of the frame, said hinges being also connected to the base, stop means carried by the base adjacent the opposite side portion of the standards of the frame, means carried by the standards and operatively connected to said stop means for mounting the frame in angular relation to the base, said stop means cooperating with the hinges of the frame to prevent damage to the hinges upon application of weight to the frame, and a bar pivoted at one end to one of the standards of the frame and detachably connected at its opposite end to the opposite standard lVitness to mark:
