ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUST LETMOLEE, a citi- .zen of the Dominionof Canada, residing at Kandahar, in the county of Humboldt and Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of 1 Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Fins, of which the following is a specification;
The present invention relates to improvements in safety pins and more particularly pertains to the locking mechanism of the pin. In the method now in vogue, when a lateral pressure is exerted on the pin, the point of the same disengages from the locking member and in consideration ofthis inadequacy, I provide a device of the character described which consists in the construction, combina tion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the preferred form of construction of my improved safety pin.
Figure 2 is a similar viewillustrating a modified form thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a similar View of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
The numeral 5 indicates the body of the pin and 6 the piercingmember. The body and the piercing member 6 will be preferably formed of a continuous pieceof metal having a spring indicated by the numeral 7 formed intermediate its ends, as indicated diagrammatically. The head of the pin is substantially positioned on the upper terminal of the body 5 and consists preferably of a thin piece of sheet metal bent around the upper terminal of the pin as indicated at 8.
On the opposite terminal is configurated the lock which is of a somewhatU-shaped construction, as indicated at 9 and the terminal of lug 10 is arcu-ately configurated to facilitate the entrance of the pin into the look.
In Figures 2 and 4, a modified form of construction is illustrated and is somewhat similar to that of the preferred form. As indicated by the numeral 11, the metal is bentaround the upper terminal of the body member and one portion extends laterally, as indicated at 12 and has an arcuate recess 13 confignrated to comply with the contour Patented inlay 23, 1922.

The portion 1st extends laterally as indicated diagrammatically and has lug 15 cottised backwardly forming a lock somewhat similar to the preferred form of construction. The terminal of lug it is also arcuately configurated to facilitate the locking of the piercing member. If desired, a suitable cap may be positioned on the locking member, rialthough the embodiment of the same has not been. illustrated.
When a lateral exertion is imparted on the body and piercing portions of the pin, as indicated at 5 and 6, the point 17 bears against the upper periphery 18 of the locking member and the lower portion tensions against the lower periphery of the outer lug. When the exertion is intensified, the tension of the pin on the locking member is also intensified, thus making it practically impossible to disengage the piercing member. The piercing member is also restricted from disengagement by the configuration of the lugs 10 and 16, illustrated in both the forms. When it is desired to disengage the pin, the piercing member passes through the opening as indicated by the numeral 19 and the same is engaged by a contrary movement.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
From the foregoing, it is thoughtthat the construction of my invention will be clearly understood and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What I claim as new is:
1. A. safety pin of the character described comprising in combination a body member, a piercing member, a coil spring positioned intermediate the said body and piercing members, locking mechanism substantially mounted on the upper terminal of the said body member, said locking member comprising a flat piece of metal bent around and substantially mounted to the upper terminal of the said body member, a portion extending from the said terminal of the said body member, in spaced relation to the terminal of the said piercing member, a wall cottised angularly from the said extending portion, a semi-circular configuration at the terminal of the said well, a lug on the said iicii'cular configuretion and an arcuate terminal on the said lug.
2. A safety pin of the character described comprising in combination a body member, a piercing member a coil spring positioned intermediate the said body and piercing members locking mechanism substantially mounted on the upper terminal of the said body member, said locking; mechanism comprising a flat piece of metal bent around and substantially mounted to the said body member, primary and secondary portions extending from the said body member in spaced relation to the upper terminal of the said piercing member an arcuate configuration ll itnessees THEODORE HovnY EDWIN H A NSON.
