illustrate a preferred embodiment of the in vention Fig. 1 is a plan view of the cover and receptacle top;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig.3 is a plan view of the receptacle top and associated parts with cover removed;
and
Fig. i is a plan view of the cover.
The top wall of the ice box or other receptacle 5 is made with a curvilinear and preferably a circular opening into which is set a ring or flange 6 bordering the opening and projecting a little above the'plane of the top wall. 7 is a segment shaped plate of sheet metal made with a straight edge, and permanently secured to the top of the flange 6. 8 is a removable cover covering the part of the opening not covered by plate 7, also made of sheet metal and provided if desired with a lining 9 of heat insulating material; The
cover 8 rests when closed on top of the flange 6 and conforms to the shape of the opening with its straight edge adjacent to thestraight edge of plate 7.
The cover 8 swin s on its straight edge as a pivot and is in no way attached to thereceptacle top. Two ledges 10, 10, made of sheet metal'are secured to the under side of plate 7 inside of and adjacent to ring 6. The top surfaces of ledges 10 are in the same plane with the top of ring 6 and afford a broad bearing surface for 7 cover which would otherwise wear and be come worn'by the'relatively sharp edge of the ring 6, if the straight edge of the cover worked merely on the ring 6.
The cover 8 hasa tongue or projection'll secured to its under side and extending from the hinge edge of the the straight edge between the ledges 10, 10, and under the plate 7 when the cover is closed. This tongue serves to guide andhold the cover in proper position on the recep tacle top.
A rod 12'is fixed at its ends to the inner sides of the ring 6 and extends across the openin straightedge of plate 7. The rod 12 constitntes a stop to engage the tongue 11 and hold the cover in open, upstanding position a'sindicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the cover is swung open;
Below the rod and underneath the tongue 11 when in open position, is a trough or gutter 13 which catches and carries away any moisture which drips from the tongue' 11,
when the cover is opened, or from the ledges 10. The tongue 11 extends under the plate Patented ay 9, i922.
0' a little below and in front of the 7 and closes the crack or joint between the straight edge of plate 7 and the'strai'ght edge of the cover when the latter is closed.
The cover may be removed for cleaning the parts by merely opening it and slipping the tongue vertically outfrom between the ledges 10. Similarly it-ma'y be replaced by inserting the tongue between the ledges 10 vhich guide it into correct working position.
It will be understood that tl'i'eicecream can is set into the receptacle below the opening and cover, and while readily accessible for service is fully protected by the cover, when closed, and safeguardedagainst any water or other moisture dripping into the can from the top of the chest by the flange 6, and by the trough 18, which catches and carries away moisture which might otherwise drip through the opening when the cover is opened. I
