Description
E. B. DECKER.
Farm-Gates.
No, 41,497, Patented August 5, 1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD B. DECKER, OE GARROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,497, dated August 5, 1873; application filed January 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. DECKER, of Oarrollton, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate, of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a side view of a gate illustrating my improvement.
My invention is an improvement in the class of farm-gates wherein the lower part may be raised and lowered independently of the upper part; and it consists in the arrangement hereinafter described.
A represents the rear or hinge gate-post, and B represents the front or latch post. 0 is the rear vertical cross-bar of the gate. D is the front cross-bar. E are the horizontal bars, and F is the inclined brace. The gate 0 D E F is hinged to the post A and secured to the post B, when closed, in the ordinary manner. The two lower horizontal bars E are, pivoted at their rear ends to the rear cross-bar O, and are connected to each other near the forward ends by a short cross-bar, G, the end parts of which are pivoted to the said lower horizontal bars E, so as to keep them in properrelative position, while allowing them to move freely. The forward ends of the pivoted horizontal bars E, when lowered, enter a slot in the front crosspivoted bar E. The hook or keeper I is pivoted to the same bolt that pivots and supports the latch H, so that when the said pivoted bars E are raised the hook or keeper I may be slipped over the end of the upper pivoted bar E, to securely support said bars, as shown in the figure in dotted lines.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with the vertical cross-bar D, rigidly connected with the upper bars of the gate, the pivoted latch H, and the lower bars one or more) pivoted to the cross-bar G and resting at their front ends in slots of the said bar D, as shown and described.
EDWARD B. DECKER.
