Description

H. S. HUMMER.
y Vent-Gimlets.
NO. 141,465, I PaentedAugust5,l873., 'y
UNITED *STATES PATENT OFFIGEc HIRAM S. RUMMER, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENT-GIMLETS.
Spccication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,465, dated August 5, 1873; application filed i l March 8, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM S. HUMMER, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vent-Gimlet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to theletters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is designed to liberate the air and gas in ale-casks, &c., when the pressure is too great; and consists, mainly, of a tube open at one end, which is provided with a gimlet-point and perforations opening into the tube at the other, and which has also at suitable points a tapering screw-thread, a stopcock, and a handle, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings is represented a side elevation of my invention as applied to a cask.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to fully describe its construction.
A represents the tube, the upper end of which is open, and its lower end is provided with the perforations a a a leading into the tube, as shown. B represents a gimletpoint securely attached to the lower end of the tube A. c represents a tapering screw-thread; d, an enlargement provided with the cock D; and c e, the handles, by means of which the instrument is turned.
The manner of using my invention will be readily understood. It is screwed into the upper portion of the barrel, cask, or other receptacle that needs vent until the tapering screwthreads take hold sufficiently to hold the gimlet in place, when vent may be properly given without danger of wasting the liquid by properly manipulating the stop-cock.
It will be observed that when the cock is open a straight passage of equal diameter, or nearly so, is opened through the entire length of the gimlet, so that sediment, dto., may be blown through without obstructing the passage.
I am aware that it is common in bottlefaucets to use a hollow stem having a cock and screw-point; and I therefore do not claim, broadly, this feature; but
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` The vent-gimlet described, consisting essentially of a single tube, A, of equal diameter throughout, provided with a stopLcock, D,
gimlet-point B, and tapering screw-thread 0,/ as described, for the purpose set forth. ,f
This specification signed and witnessed this 11th day of February, 1873.
