B 'e'it 'knownthat I, ALEXANDER LONY, captain, Corps of'Engineers, Unlted States.Krmy,1a citizen of the United States,
stationed at l vashi'ngton, District of colum bia,, have invented M an Improvement 1n ingis a specification. I V The;1nvent1on described herein may be used by theGovernment,or any of ms officers Clamping Mechani s'nnloii which the follow- Governi'n'ennljor by any other .personin the U nited', States, without payment of any roy- This inventionrelates to a novelclamping mechanism which, whiledesigned more particularly= for use in connection with. pile driving machines, is applicable for. use, in
othersituationsj and the present .applica tion covering this inventionisia divisional application of a parent application filed April 26, 1919, Serial No. 293031 I The object of the invention is to provide a i novel clamping mechanism which is BX- tremely simple in construction, veryeasy to operate, thoroughly eliicient in operation, and durablein use.
lVith thisobject in view, and others appearing as the specification proceeds and the nature of the invention more fully develops, the invention resides in a type of clamping mechanism controllable from the top of a The invention is graphically illustrated in the accompanying drawlng, in which like reference characters designate correspond.

of. V
' 1 designates a clampingdog, thegaw. 2 of "which is adapted to engage an object to be clamped, and the head 3 of which is pivotally supportedupon a pivot l projecting transversely through thelegs of a U-shaped V clamp support 5 carried by a clamping screw 6, which is swiveled in the baseiof said U5 shaped clampsupport 5, and is threaded through; thejbase of a U-shaped bracket 7, H the legs of which are provided with. flanged. terminals 8, 8, adapted to be secured to a j stationary support A, las:by.,meansxof they rivets'9, 9. This supportmaybe a channel- ;iron,: as shown, forming-part of the movable upperirameiofa pi'le-driving machine (such I- as shown in my said co-pending'a'pplication) I and carrying wheels" (one thereof, a, being shown in the drawing) moving on a track C, formmgpart of the stationary lower" frame of apile-driving machine. The legs of the U-shaped bracket 7 are provided with longitudinally extending recesses 10, 10, 'in their inner faces, Whichrecesses extend from apoi nt in line with the flanged terminals 8, 8,,upward towardthebridgeorbase portion e 201? the U-shaped bracket 7. {The ends of the j pivot pin flqproject into said -recesses, fasf shown. The groove and pin construction. justdescribed permits vertical movementof v the support 5 relativeto the bracket? and prevents relative rotation thereof. A handle,
or crank 11 is securedfto the clamp screw 6. I A hook 12 is carried'by the bracket 7, preferably on the bridge or base portion thereof,-
and the chain 13, or the "like, is secured to the clamping dog 1,'whereby,when' the lat- V ter is swung from the operative to the inoperative position thereof, it maybe supported in the latter position by hooking the chain 13 on the hook 12.
In operation, assuming that the clamping dog 1 is in inoperative position, that is, in
a position oblique to and away ,from the necessary to be done is to swing the clamp the crank 11 to cause a verticalupward movement of the clamp support 5, the pin 4 and the clamping dog 1. Such upward verj tiral movement 18 continued until the clamp is securely tightened. v v
The clamping mechanism described has been designed for particular use in pile- I driving machines, which embody a movable upper frameiand a lower stationary frame, wh ch upper frame it sad-vantageous to clamp to'the lower frame after the formerhas been moved relative to theflatter; but,
I track channel A or likeobject, all that is obviously applicable to other situations and of" course, the clamping mechanism is is susceptible of general use.
Having thus fully described ,my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to sefcure by Letters Patent. is r 1. The combination with a transportable structure and a rail for supporting said structure, of a U-shaped clampbracket'car ried by the structure, a clamping dog, a Ushaped clamp support to which said clamping dog is pivotally secured, and screw ;means carried by said clamp bracket c for raising andlowering said clam support,
said bracket being provided with means 00- operating with the pivot pm of the clamping dog torp'reventing rotary movement of said clamp support relative to said clamp bracket.
" '2. The combination witha transportable structure and a rail for supporting said structure, ofa clamp bracket carried by the structure and provided with longitudinally extending recesses, a clamp support, a
clamping dog pivoted to said support, the
structure and a rail for supporting the structure, of a clamp bracket carried by the structure, a clamp support slidable in the bracket, a clamping dog pivoted to the support and having an endto contact under the flange of the rail and a connection between the bracket and support whereby the, support may be moved to bring the end-10f the dog into contact with the rail'or release it therefrom.
AQThe combination with a transportable structure and a rail for supporting said structure; of a bracket mounted on said structure, a clamping dog, a frame slidably. fmounted in the bracket and pivotally supporting said "dog, meanscarrled by the bracket and connected with the frame to actuate the latter, and additional means in connection with thebracket and. cooperatmg; withthe pivotal pin of the dog to 'pre- I vent rotary movement of the jframe during its actuation.
5. The combination with a transportable structure and a railfor supporting said structure; of a bracket mounted on said structure, a clamping dog, a frame mounted for vertical movement within the bracket and pivotally supporting said dog, a screw carried by the bracket and connected with the frame to actuate the latter, and additional' means in connection with the'bracket and cooperating with the pivotal pin of the dog to prevent rotary movement of' the; frame when vertically actuated.
