H. DRESSEL. Shifting-Rails for Carriage Seats.
No. 141,335, Patentedluly 29,1873.
AM FHOTO'L mm GRAPHIC co. M floss amvs's mnc sss) UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
HERRMAN DRESSED, OF SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT.
' IMPROVEMENT IN SHlFTlNG-RAILS FOR CARRIAGE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,335, dated July 29, 1873; application filed July 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERRMAN DRESSEL, of Springfield, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shit'tingRails for Carriage-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a plan or top View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal Vertical section of the same in the plane a; 00, Fig. 1.
. Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination of extension-rods, tubular connecting pieces, and supporting-brackets with each other and a carriage seat, in such a manner that, by means of the tubular connections, the extension-rods can be pulled out or pushed in, and
. thereby the top rail can be adjusted to seats of different size; and, furthermore, the operation' of securing said top rail to the seat is materially facilitated.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a carriage-seat, which is provided with a top rail, B. This top rail is composed of three bars, a a a, tubular connections I) b, and supporting-brackets o o. The ends of the bars a fit into the tubular connections b, and they are adjusted therein by means of set-screws d. The brackets c are secured to the seat, and they are provided with eyes to receive and support the bars a, or the tubular connections 1).
One end of each of the bars a a is turned down and fastened to the seat, but the other end of each said bars is supportedby one of the tubular connections. The ends of the bar 7 a are both supported by the tubular connections, and by moving the bars a a a in or out in said tubular connections my top rail can be readily adapted to the seat A.
The tubular connections I) may either be made with sharp corners, as shown in the drawing, or they may be made wlth rounded corners; or, if desired, the connections I) may be made in half circles, or partly or 'wholly tubular, so that the top rail can be adjusted to the seat.
The brackets 0 may be fastened to any part of the seat, and they are provided with pivots for the support of the carriage-top, in the usual manner.
It will be readily understood by practical carriage-makers that, by my invention, considerable time and labor are saved in fitting the top rail to a carriage-seat. My top rails can be adapted to any seat without trouble, and by unpracticed hands, whereas in fitting a top rail of the ordinary construction to a seat considerable skill is required, and then such rail is only fit for one and the same seat, while my rail can be readily taken ofl' from one seat and fastened to another, whenever it may be desirable.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the extension-bars a a a, tubular connections I) b, and the supporting-brackets c, the whole adapted to the seat of a carriage, substantially in the manner shown and described.
' HERRMAN DRESSEL.
