- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDUARDO Gassnr, a subject of the King of Spain, and residing at Alfonso XIII, J. 0. 2, Pontevedra, Spain,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in 5 Opening Devices for Tins Used for Preserving Foods, of which the following is a specification.
One of the most successful methods of closure for tins used for preserving foodstuds and the like is that of closure by the mechanical catch system in which the tins are hermetically sealed without the use of solder, by fitting an embossed part of the lid into the open end of the tin, interlocking the rim of the lid with the turned over portion of the top of the tin and turning the same over so as to lie against the sides of the tin. This system is known as the,sertissage. Difiiculties have been experienced in applying opening devices to tins so closed, but according to one method of opening which has been proposed, an annulargroove has been provided in the side of the embossed portion of the lid which fits into the open end of the tin, and a metal wire fitted into the groove with its ends projecting through a hole therein, the hole being sealed and the ends of the wire enclosed therein by a drop of solder.
It has been discovered, however, inthe manufacture of such tins, that this method of fixing the wire has disadvantages from the practical and economical point of view.
The object of this invention is to overcome these disadvantages and with this object in view the invention consists in soldering one end of the wire within the groove adjacent a hole in the groove through which the other end passes, sealing the said hole by a drop of solder, and allowing a sufficient length of wire to protrude through such hole as may be engaged by a door key, a fork, a stick, or any other suitable means whereby the wire can be rolled up and caused to cut through the groove in which it is resting. In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is aperspective view of the tin with the lid fitted with my improved opening arrangement, ready to be placed in position to be sealed thereto. i

Having now described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:-
The combination of a tinfor preserving tin and turning same over in the well known manner, a groove formed by a recess in the 7 vertical side of the embossed portion of the lid, such recess being situated substantially centrally of such vertical side, and a ripping In testimony whereof I have signed my name in this specification.
