Description

A. M. ADAMS.
Combined Latches and Locks.
Patented July 29, 18713.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.l
ANDY M. ADAMS, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED I-.ATCHES AND LCCKS. l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,193, dated July 29, 1873 application led.
` November 15, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDY M. ADAMS, of Sacramento city, in the county ot' Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door' Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The nature of my invention consists of a tumbler pivoted to the sliding bolt, in combination with a sliding plate carrying a projection, which, when the plate is thrown forward, engages in a notch in the tumbler and locks the bolt, as will hereafter be more fully set forth.
Figure 1 is an interior view of my lock. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line A B of Fig. 1. l
a represents a hinged latch; b, a strike 5 and c, a spring for keeping the latch forward. Pivoted to the strike is a lever, d, which can be moved around back of the latch, so as to bear against it, and thus lock it rigidly in place. E is the sliding bolt, operated by a knob placed on a vertical line with the key-hole, and which has secured to its rear end a spiral spring, g, for drawin git backinto position. To the lower edge of this sliding bolt is pivoted one or more tumblers, i, the rear or free end of which rests upon a projection, n, on the sliding plate. The sliding locking-plate h is provided with a',
cess in front of the lock and allows the door to be opened. m is a stationary pin, which serves as a stop to the forward movement of the lockingplate h.
In locking the key sweeps around and engages with the tumbler fi, raises and relieves it from contact with the projection ot' the lockin g-plate h, carries said plate forward into contact with stop-pin m, and permits tumbler 'i to fall, engaging projection u of plate h in notch o of tumbler c'. The bolt e is thus rendered immovable and the latch t holds the door uutil the bolt e is relieved by unlocking.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The tumbler 'i pivoted to the sliding bolt e, in combination with the sliding plate la careying a projection, n, when the parts are a=.r ranged to operate substantially as set forth.
` ANDY M. ADAMS.
