Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. Evnmnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at River Forest, inthe county oi Cook and State of Illinois, have invented 'a new and useful Oil Can, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil cans, its object being` to provide a can with means'for catching oil dripping from the spout and which would otherwise be lost.
A further object is to provide a means for draining the oil back into the can, there being a valve arrangement for automatically closing the drain opening when the can is tilted in any direction during the discharge oi. oil.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple, compact and efficient and will not readily get out of order.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of the body of an oil can,.the mouth 2 thereof being surrounded by a screw threaded flange 3 engaged by a screw cap Ll. This screw cap has a central tubular portion 5 one end ofwhich projects beyond the cap and is screw threaded as shown at 6. A supplemental cap 7 engages this threaded portion 6 and has a central opening 8 surrounded by a depending circular flange 9. An inclined disk 10 is secured within the central tubular portion 5 and has a central opening 11 and a small drain opening 12. This disk is formed in a blank including a neck 13 and an arm 1&1 and before the disk is placed within the tubular portion 5 and soldered at its edges the neck 13 is bent downwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

as shown in Figure 1 and the arm 14- is bent to form a laterally extending yoke 15 having a large guide opening 16 inthe upper portion thereof and a small guide opening 17 directly thereunder. The centers of these openings 16 and 17 are in line with the center ci the opening 12. A delivery nozzle 18 is secured at its base within the opening 11 and extends through the opening 8 in the cap 7. A cylindrical valve 19 is slidable within the opening 16 and has a conical end 2O which projects into the openingy 12 so that the valve is thus held against displacement relative to the two openings. The lower end of the valve 19 rests loosely on the flat base of an inverted conical lifting cam 21 which is supported by the lower portion of the yoke 15 and has a stem 22 extending downwardly therefrom and carrying a weight 23. Thus it will be seen that f when the can is in its normal or upright position any oil draining along the outer surthe valve longitudinally and cause it to f close the opening 12. Thus no oil can low from the can by way of the opening 12 and any oil that may be within the compartment 24 will be trapped therein by the flange 9 on the cap 7.
By providing an oil can with an improvement such as described a considerable saving of oil will be eilected and, furthermore, the outer surface of the can will be kept free of oil and oil will be kept oil of the hands of the user.
It will be seen that the parts can be easily made and assembled and the entire structure can be very cheaply made by stamping and soldering.
`What is claimed is 1. 'The combination with an oil can, of of a cap removably mounted thereon, a central compartment within the cap having an inclined bottom provided with a drain opening, a nozzle supported by said inclined bottom and extending beyond the cap, a slide valve supported under the bottom oi said compartment and normally projecting into the drain opening, and gravity operated means for shifting the valve to closed position when the can is tilted in any di` reotion away from its upright position.
2. The combination with an oil can of a cap. having a compartment provided with an inclined bottom, there `being a' drain opening in said bottom, a delivery nozzle extending from said bottom, a valve slid- `ably supported below the bottom of said with an inclined bottom, there being a drain opening in said bottom, a delivery nozzle extending from and supported by said bottom, a supplemental cap engaging the wall of said compartment, an inwardly extending Hange thereon surrounding and spaced from the nozzle, and gravity operated means for closing the drain opening when the can is tilted in any direction away from Vits 11pright position.
4. The combination with an oil can, of a cap having a compartment therein, a disk secured in the compartment and constituting an inclined bottom therefor, said disk having a drain opening, a nozzle supported by the disk, an arm integral with and depending from the disk and forming a guide yoke, a valve slidably engaging the yoke, a cam supported by the yoke and constituting a support for the valve and a weighted stem depending from the cam, said cam constituting means for shifting the valve` to close the drain opening Whenthe Vcan `is tilted in any direction away from its upright position.
