Description
E. S. KIMBALL.
HOIST.
APPLICATION FILED MAYH. i921.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
UNITED STTES ERASTUS S. KIMBALL, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
HOIST.
Application filed May 17,
To all whom 2'75 may concern:
Be it known that I, ERASTUS S. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county ofNew Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoists; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Fig. 1 an end view of a hoist constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a side view, partly in section, of the same.
This invention relates to improvement, in hoists and particularly to portable hoists of crane-like type, the object of the invention being to provide means for adjusting the position of the sheave, over which the rope or chain passes to the device to be supported, upon the frame, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ an I-beam 5, supported at its ends in heads 6 and 7, which are mounted upon the upper ends of legs 8 and 9. Secured to the legs at one end is a windlass 10, from which a cable 11 passes over an idler 12 to a sheave 13 mounted between a fork 14: extending downward from a yoke 15 adapted to move upon the beam 5, and the lower ends of the fork let are curved so that the axle 16, upon which the sheave 13 turns, is in a plane forward of the plane of the center of the yoke 15. The distance between the top 17 and the bottom 1.8 of. the yoke is slightly greater than the depth of the beam 5, so that, before any load is applied to the cable 11. the yoke may be readily adjusted back and forth upon the beam 5, but as soon as any strain is applied to the cable 11, the yoke 15 will be rocked,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922. 1921. Serial No. 470,417.
so that the rear edge of the bottom wall 18 will grip the under face of the beam 5, and the forward edge of the top 17 will grip the upper edge of the said beam, so that the yoke will be interlocked with the beam at any desired point of adjustment, this locking be coming automatic as soon as strain is applied to the cable. The terms forward and rear are used relatively.
I claim:
1. A hoist comprising a beam, means for supporting the same, a yoke mounted on the said beam and carrying a sheave over which a cable may pass, the space between the top and bottom of said yoke being greater than the depth of the said beam, whereby said yokeis adapted to be rocked upon the beam, and whereby its edges friotionally engage therewith.
2. A hoist comprising an Lbeam, means for supporting the same, a yoke mounted on the said beam, a sheave supported by said yoke in a plane forward of the central plane of the yoke, whereby said yoke may be rocked so that its edges frictionally engage with said beam.
3. A hoist comprising an I'beam, heads at opposite ends thereof, legs supporting said heads, a Windlass secured to the legs at one end, an idler above said Windlass, a yoke mounted on said beam, a sheave supported by said yoke .in a plane forward of the central plane of the yoke, and a cable extending from said Windlass over said idler and over said sheave. and adapted, when strain is ap plied, to rock the said yoke, whereby it is interlocked with said beam.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERASTUS lIlMBALL. Witnesses JOHN S. BROWN, WM. IBSEN.
