BREAST WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
Application filed April 1, 1920. Serial No. 370,380.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VVASILY Droonn, a citizen of Russia, residing at Gary, county of Lake, and the State of Indiana, have in- .vented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast lVheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has as its object the provision of a novel form of breast wheel, in which the several buckets are independently adjustable with respect to the periphery of the wheel, thereby assuring that the several.
buckets shall be filled with a definite quantity of the flowing water, and also that the wheel is capable of being accurately balanced.
This and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing a breast wheel made, in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2- 2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a bucket and its shank.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates a body of water held by the dam 11. Mounted adjacent to the breast of the dam are a pair of beams 12. carrying bearings 14- in which is rotatable a shaft 15, having a fixed gear 16 by means of which power may be utilized Secured between the bearings 14L, 0n the shaft 15, are a pair of circular plates 17 having inwardly turned annular flanges 18, the same being arranged closely adjacent to the breast of the dam.
Secured between the discs 17 are inner and outer wings, respectively 20 and 21, held in spaced relation by connecting elements 22, having enlarged central parts 23, through which pass bolts 25 provided with nuts 26 accessible from the exterior of the discs 17.
A plurality of other like bolts provided with nuts at their ends pass between the rings 20 and 21 into slots 28 formed longitudinally in the shanks 30 of the bucket element 31. The rings 20 and 21 are provided with recesses'20 and 21 respectively formed in their adjacent edges and the shanks of said buckets are engaged in these recesses, the bucket elements are curved upwardly at their extreme outer ends 32, these bucket elements being adapted to make contact with the interior peripheries of the flanges 18 and may be adjusted by means of the bolts and slots.
Water is delivered from the buckets into a spillway and received through a gate comprising a pair of sliding elements 33, the guide member for which is designated. 32, and elements 33 are actuated by a right and left hand threaded screw 34- provided with a hand wheel 35, which allows a quantity of water to pass through to the open buckets and which is manually controlled in. accordance with the power required.
In operation, the parts having been as sembled in the manner indicated, should wear occur, or for other reason it be desired to shorten or lengthen the operative length of the bucket elements to 32 inclusive, it will be obvious that it can be accomplished in a positive and convenient manner.
The water entering between the two portions of the gates 33 impinges upon the upper surface of the buckets, driving the wheel by its gravity, the used water passing from the buckets, at a point near the bottom of the wheel, in to the spillway in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a breast wheel. the combination with a rotatab-ly mounted shaft and means on said shaft for conveying power, of a pair of circular plates, flanges extending inwardly from said plates around their periphery. rings fixed up on the inner side of said plates, buckets having shanks containing elongated slots, bolts passing through said plates engaging in the mentioned slots, and means for clamping said buckets in an adjusted position whereby the operative length of said buckets may be extended or retracted.
2. In a breast wheel, the combination with a rotatably mounted shaft, a pair of circular plates secured to said shaft. flanged bands extending inwardly from said plates, rings secured at concentrically spaced intervals between said lates, said rings having recontrol the water delivered to said bucket cesses formed 1n their adjacent edges, buckwheel, and means for actuating the sections ets comprising shanks having elongated slots of said gate whereby the passage of water 10 en aged in the mentioned recesses; curved m be controlled. 1 V
5 en 5 formed with said shanks adjustable n testimony whereof I have aflixed my with reference to the inner surface of said g ature flanged bands, a sectional gate'adapt-ed to WASILY DYGODA.
