EXPRESS WAGON.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that FRANK BpSNYDnR, a
citizen of the United States, residing atv press wagons ,of the type used bychildren at play..
Y A primary Objectis to providejan improved means 'of mounting'the wagon bedl on the lrunning gear 'in such ai novel manner Vas to lreduce shocks and Vthe y'tractive e to move'the wagon over rough places when loaded.y i I f v Another object Vof the invention is to provide a novel mounting for the bed whereby the contents thereof 'can -readily be disghalrged by elevatingffthe iront end'of the ec Y With 'these' vand otherY objects in View',
. which will be more" readily apparentes partsherein'after more `-fully pointed out, il-
.the natureof the Vinventionis better un-' derstood,the same consists .in the novel'construction, combination Aand arrangement of lustrated and claimed.Y Y Y Y It'will be apparent to those skilled inthe art, that the same is susceptible to struc# tural changes and modifications withoutpdeparting from the spirit or scope of the invention, but a preferred and practical. embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which-'- Figure l is a plan view of an express wagon having my improvements attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the wagon and parts shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the parts shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Figures 4 and 4a are plan and edge views of the locking plates which may be disconnected when the wagon is used as a miniature dumpwagon.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail View of the spring suspension which is used to carry the wagon bed and its load.

Application filed- Julyr 2i,

fect no change is contemplated or required in .the usual construction of the bed or body of the wagon which may be designated vin its entirety by the numeral 10.4 Accordingly it is proposed to mount the said body upon a'novel running gear or support carried by the front and rear axles 11 andl 11 having the wheels 12 thereon. Upon the front axle 11 is arranged a suitable bolster 13 which may be connected with the front axle in any suitable manner as at 14.
The upper side of the bolster 13 preferably carries altransverse plate 15, the outer end Voi which has attached the'ieto'the rearwardly extending frame bars lfwho'se rear endsmay be connected directly to the rear axle A11'to provide Ya rigid connection for the front' and e rear axles. mediate point the side frame' bars 16 are connected `by a transverse fulcrum bar 17. In front of the said ulc-'runi `bar is -arranged a spring abutment bar, or its equivalent 18", the same being provided with openingsadjacent the frame'barv 16 to'slid- 1:
ably accommodate the rods19cari'ied lby the lfront ends of-the -body supporting'bars 20.
Patented Apr. 4, 19922.'
At an interl abutment member 18 and the abutment washer 22, whereby the upward movement of the forward ends ofthe bar 20, that is y the endsof the bars having the rods 19 connected thereto is resisted by the compressive force of the springs 21.
The rear ends of the bars 19 are pivotally connected as at 23 with the rear end of the body 10, and since the bars 19 have a more or less fulcruming engagement with the bar 17 according to the strength of the springs 21 it will be apparent that the rear end of the body 10 has a resilient support on the rear end of the frame. As the greater part of the weight is usuallycarried over the rear axle the advantages of this resilient mounting will be readily apparent.
For the purpose of holding the front end of the body 10 down to the running gear, any suitable and convenient form of lock may be provided. It is preferable, however, to use a simple form of lock that will readilypermit the body to be swung on the pivots 23 to permit the wagon tobe used as -a dump" `frame bars 16, whereby they may be'brought into registration to receivea pin,bolt or like locking device to hold the `body level when it is not desired to use the saine as a dump wagon., By extracting the pins from the eyes 26 into locking plates the body will readily swing on the pivots 23 to provide the usual dump wagon effect. v
Wagons built upon the above principle are easily operated over rough roads or streets and when used as a coaster the method of body support greatly facilitates the ease with which the same is operated Ywhile at the same time it eliminates vthe shocks and jars usually transmitted tothe body ofv the vehicle.;
