To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CnAIoIn GYLE BoRTH- WIOK, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Corstorphine, Midlothian, Scotland, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Golf and like Bags, of which the following is a specification.

My said invention relates to self supporting golf and like bags of the tripod type in which one member of the tripod is fixed to the bag, whilst the other two members are operated transversely and laterally through springs, and held in their closed position by means of a latch, and has for its object to improve and simplify the construction'and action of such devices. The improved de vice can be readily attached to, or detached from, a bag, and is equally applicable to existing, or new, bags.

In carrying out my invention the device may be made of any suitable material, and consists of three legs forming the tripod. One of these legs has .fixed to it near its upper end a plate, the lower edge of which has formed on, or fixed to it, at each side a lug, and the adjacent faces of said lugs are preferably of a semi-circular form, for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to. The other two legs, near their upper ends, are each pivoted to a spindle or rod passing through a casing, and the upper ends of said legs are connected by a spring. The casing is connected to the plate by a spindle or rod. which passes through lugs on the latter, and this spindle is also provided with a spring.

The plate fixed to one leg, is attached near the top or mouth of the bag in any suitable manner, and the lower end of this leg is connected to the lower end of the bag. lt is preferred that this leg be slightly longer than the other two legs.

In order that my said invention and the manner of performing the same may be properly understood I hereunto append two sheetsof explanatory drawings to be hereinafter referred to in describing my invention.

Figure 1. is a back elevation of a golf bag provided with the improved supporting device. Figures2, and 3, are respectively a side elevation, and a back elevation, showing the device in its acting position. Figure 4.. is a back elevation, drawn to a larger size, and showing the casing in dotted lines so as to expose the interior, and Figure 5.

is a bottom plan view. In these drawings the same reference letters are used to mark the same or like parts wherever they are repeated.

As shown in Figures 2, and 3, of the drawings, the golf bag A, is supported in an in clined position by means of three legs B. C. and D. forming a tripod One of these legs B, which is positioned inside the bag A, has fixed to near its upper end a plate E, provided atits lower end with lugs F. F one on each side, the adjacent faces of said lugs being of a semi-circular form (Figure 5) for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to. The other two legs C. and D, are each pivotally supported on pins G. and G passing through a casing H, and the upper ends of said legs are, as shown in Figure 4, connected to each other by a spring J. The casing H, is connected to the plate E. by a spindle K, which passes through lugs LJM. on the latter, and this spindle is provided with a spring N.

The plate E, is attached near the top, or mouth, of the bag A, to the leg B, by means of screws P, and the lower end of this leg is attached to the bag at or near its lower end, and it is preferred that this leg B, be slightly longer than the other two legs C. and D.

If desired, and when not in use, the lower ends of the two free legs C. and D. of the tripod, may be attached to the bag A. by a stlrap R. (as shown in Figure 1) clip, or the li (e.

The device is used as follows :It is assumed that the device has been fixed to the bag A. with the two free legs C. and D. in

their closed position, as shown in Figures 1,

and 5, that is to say, lying Within the semicircular lugs F, F which serve as stops. In this position these legs are nearly parallel to each other, comparatively close together and lie fiat against the bag A. When it is desired to use the device to support the bag A, the two legs C. and D. are drawn towards each other, thus extending the spring J, whilst at the same time clearing the lugs F, F on the plate E, and as the spring N, (one part of which bears against the plate E, and the other part against the casing H) is in compression it reacts to force out the legs C. and D, whilst at the same time the spring J, extendsthem into their acting or supporting position, as shown in Figures 2,

their-closed position, it is only necessary to grasp them near the top, draw them to- .gether, and pass them inwards against'the bag, in which position the spring J, will automaticall force them into contact with, and retain t em within,'the lugs F. and F, as shown in Figure 4.

What I claim is z I 1. A supporting device for, golf bags and the like comprising a pair of supporting members, a casing1'to which said members are pivotally connected adapted to be hingedly connected to a bag, said members being extensible relatively and relative to. the bag, and means for retaining said members in closed position'against the bag.

2. A supporting device for golf bags and the like comprising a pair of supporting members, a casing to which said'members are pivotally connected, a plate hingedly connected with said casing and adapted to be secured to a bag, said members being extensible relatively and relative to the bag, and means for retaining said members in closed position against the bag.

3. A supporting device for golf bags and the like comprising a pair of supporting members, a casing to which said members are pivo'tally connected, a plate hingedly connected with said casing and adapted to be secured to a bag, means for extending said members relative to each other, and means for retaining said members in closed position.

4. A supporting device for golf and like bags, comprising a casing, two members adapted to form with a bag a tri od, said members being pivotally connecte to said casing, a nlate adapted to be fixed to the bag towhich said casing is pivoted, means for automatically extending said members relative to the bag, means for extending said members relative to each other, and

a means for retaining said members in their closed position.

A supporting device for golf and like ing adapted to be rigidly fixed to a bag 'and the other two membersbeing movably connected to said casing, a late ada ted to he fixed to the bag, a spind e pivotal y con-- necting said casing /to said plate, a spring associated with said spindle and adapted to extend'said casing and members carried thereby relatively to the bag, means for extending the free members relative to each other, and means for retaining said members in their. closed position.

6. A supporting device for golf and like bags, comprising a casin a ha and three members formin a tripo one 0 said members being rigidly fixed to the bag and the othe two membersbeing movably connected to said casing, a plate fixed to the bag to which said casing is pivoted, means forautomatically extending the freemembers relative to the bag, a spring for extending the free. members relative to each other, and means for retaining said members in their closed position.

7. A supporting device for golf and like bags, comprising a casing, a bag and three members formin a tripod, one of said members being rigidity fixed to the bag and the other two 'members being adjustably connected to said casing. a plate vfixed to the bag to which said casing is pivoteihmeans for automatically extending the free members relative to the Bag, means for extending the free members relative to each other. lugs secured on said plate and a spring lconnection between the free members for retaining said members in their closed posi tion.
