To'aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB Eb MALZI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown', in thecountyof Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in At-' tachments for Riveting l-Iammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention vrelates to an improved guard especially adapted 'forruse on riveting hammers' i A principal aim of this invention is to provide a guard for pneumatic riveting hammers which when applied to the forward portions of a pneumatic riveting hammer will effectively prevent sparks and hot metal chips upon leaving'the rivet head being formed, from striking and possibly causing serious injury to the operator. More particularly, the invention herein disclosed is especially adapted for use when forming the head on a rivet underneath or below the pieces-being fastened together. Of course, when forming the head of a rivet on the under side of a. plurality of'metal sheets or the like, the operator must naturally position himself belowthe rivet with the result that sparks and hot scale 'or chips .upon.
leaving the'rivet head strike the 'operators arms, hands and very often scatter in the air to such an extent that sparks'and small hot-chips fly into the eyes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a guard for pneumatic rivetinghammers which may be readily moved rearwardly or out-of the way of the operator ing hammers and which is desirable in use and cheap 'tomanufacture.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 generally designates a pneumatic riveting hammer which is inclusive of a barrel 11 having a longitudinally extending b0re'12 within which the usual piston reciprocates for operating va longitudinally movable plunger 13. As illustrated particularly in Figures land 2, the longitudinally 1n0vable plunger 13 is formed with an enlarged head let having a concaved recess within which the head of a rivet 15 is received as the plunger is forced into engagement with the rivet. In this case, the rivet 15 is illustrated as being extended through sheets of metal l6 and 17 though it is obvious that the rivet may be, employed for connecting other elements. lVhile the head of the rivet is being formed the rivet is .held in position by an anchoring member 19.
The improved guard generally designated by the, numeral 20 consists of a cylindrical attaching portion 21 adapted to be slidably arranged about the forward portion of the barrel 11. The cylindrical attaching portion of the guard is preferably of leather or other yieldable material so that the same will snugly engage the barrel of the hammer and will not partake of any great amount of movement as the result of vibration. As ilplurality of transverse openings or ports 29 lustrated in Figure 5, the cylindrical attaching portion 21 is formed from a single length of leather having its end portions overlapped and connected by spaced rivets or fastening devices 22.
Secured to the outer side of the forwardv portion of the attaching sleeve 21 is a cylindrical protector 24.- which is preferably formed from galvanized iron having its end portions overlapped and connected by rivets 26. It will be noted that the forward rivet 22 of the attaching sleeve 21 is also extended throughthe rear plortion of the cylindrical protector at so that the parts are securely connected. additional rivets 28 are alsoextended through theoverlapped portions of the sleeve 21 and protectorQstso that the cylindrical protector is securely. attached to the sleeve. sleeve 21 is positioned about the forward portion of the barrel 11 so that the cylindrical protector 24: will surround the enlarged head 14 of the plunger and the extended portion ofthe rivet. During the initial hammering of the extended portion of the rivet, sparks and frequently hot chips of metal leave the rivet and possibly strike the operator. This is especially true when upper cutting rivets, that is when employing the pneumatic riveting hammer to form the head on a rivet underneath or below the piece or pieces being fastened together. When driving rivets in this manner the sparks andhot scale or chips which fall strike the operators arms, handsand very often lodge in the eyes of the operator with disastrous results. With the employment of this device the sparks and hot chips are not allowed to strike the operator or leave the immediate vicinity. of the rivet. since the screens 30 and the protector 24 effectively intercept all flyingmatter. hen the head of the rivet is being finished, as illustrated in Figure 2, the sleeve may be slipped rearwardly soas to give the operator an unobstructedi view of the plunger head and the rivet head. However, while the heady is being formed the operator may view the operation through the screens 30. lVhen the nature of.v the work does not necessitate the use of the guard, the same may be either entirely removed or slipped rearwardly on the barrel of the hammer out of the way of the operator.
With reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be observed that a guard constructed in accordance with this invention willeffectively protect'the operator against all sparks and chips flying from theaivet during the formation of the head on the same. Also a device constructed in accordancewith this invention may be used without.interferingwith the riveting operation or the rapidity with which the work may be performed.
