/M T Y 1 I UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADO C. KARRAKER, 0F DONGOLA, ILLINOIS.
AXLE SE'ITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1922.
Application filed December 29, 1920. Serial No. 433,785.
the device is specially adapted to straighten the bent front axles of motor cars without removing them from the cars.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an axle setter constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Two parallel bars 4 are provided and are secured together at each end. These bars are preferably welded together so that they appear likea very long link. A loop-shaped clevis 5 is provided at each end of the machine, and is arranged to straddle the two bars and to slide freely on them longitudinally. A bolt 6 is provided at the forked end portion ofv each clevis for securing the clevis to the axle.
Each clevis has a block 7 secured in its middle part and bearing against the edges of the bars, and this block has a tongue 8 which projects into the space between the bars and slides freely with the clevis. The block 7 is secured to the clevis by a bolt 9after its position has been adjusted so that the clevis will slide with the requisite freedom. The
the bars 4 and the end portions of the axle.
A presser block 10 is arranged to slide in the space between the bars 4:, and it has flanges 16 which bear on the same edges of .the bars as the blocks 7 The presser block is provided with a screwthreaded hole 12, and 14 is a pressing or setting screw which works in the hole 12. The setting screw is arranged to bear on the bent portion of the axle, and it has a rectangular head 15 for manipulating it. 3 I
The machine can be applied to either side of the axle according to the direction in which it is bent. The machine can also be changed by sliding both clevices onto one end portion of the bars 4, and arranging the presser block and screw on their other end portion, in order to adapt the machine to axles which require to be set at one end.
What I claim is:
1. An axle setter, comprising a pair of parallel bars, two similar loop-shaped clevices mounted to slide longitudinally on the bars, each clevis having a spacing block for the axle secured in its middle part, means for securing the forked end portions of the clevices to the axle, a presser block adjustable longitudinallyon the said bars, and a resser screw engaging with the presser block and adapted to bear on the axle.
2. An axle setter, comprising a pair of parallel bars, two similar loop-shaped clevices mounted to slide longitudinally on the bars, each clevis having a spacing block for the axle secured to its middle part and provided with a tongue which slides in the space between the said bars, means for securing the forked end portions of the clevices to the axle, a presser block adjustable longitudinally on the said bars, and a presser screw engaging with the presser block and adapted to bear on the axle.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
ADO C. KARRAKER.
