Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS STEERS, OF MILTON, wIsoONsIN, ASSIGNOB 0F O EIIALF HIS RIGHT TO w. e. HAMILTON, OE sA E PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,960, dated July 15, 1873 application filed April 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS STEEEs, of Milton,in the county of Rock and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjusta- -any of the known and usual ways, and provided at its inner lower corner with a metal strap, a, projecting beyond the gate, and having a hole through it for the passage of a vertical rod, 1), which is held parallel with the gatepost A by brackets orstaples d d, attached to the same. This forms the lower hinge for the gate, and allows thegate to move vertically up and down. The upper hinge of the gate is formed by a hook, f, fastened in the gate-post A, and an eye, h, attached to the end of a lever, D. This lever passes through a box or guide, E, attached to the inhorizontal position, the angle of the lever D only being changed. I
At the front end of the gate is a slide, I, with lever J, to latch the gate by moving said slide into a groove on the inner side of the post B. This latching device will operate at whatever height the gate may be placed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the gate 0 with strap a, the post A with vertical rod b, staples d d, and hook f, the pivoted lever D with eye h, the guide E with teeth 1 i, and the pawl G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingI have hereunto set my hand and seal this 3d day of April, 1873.
. THOMAS STEERS. [L. s]
