Description
H. I. HAWXHURST.
VACUUM FEED INDICATOR. APPLICATION FILED MAY 24. 1920.

UNIT-ED VACUUM-FEED INDICATOR.
' Application filed May 24,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY I. Haw iionsr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sierra Madre, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vacuum- Feed Indicators.
My invention relates to an indicator, primarily designed for automobiles, which will indicate to the driver whether or not the vacuum feed of the machine is working properly, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for that purpose. 7 I
In the drawings forming a part of this application Fig. 1 is a view of a fragment of the face of the dashboard of an automobile with my indicator in place thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of my indicator on the line 22 of Fig. 1. I 2 V Referr'ng to the drawings 5 is the clashboard of-anautomobile to which my indicator isattached by means of a nut 6 which screws upon stem 7 that projects through part 5. tom 7 has a channel S extending from the outer end thereof and terminating in the circular piston chamber 9 which is bored in a boss 10 that is cast integral with the body 11 of which stem 7 is also an integral part. A piston 12 is mounted in chamber 9 and has a sliding movement there in. Piston 12 has attached thereto by screw 13 an indicator plate 14. A spacer washer 15 holds the plate a. predetermined distance frorn'the piston. Body ll is preferably circular and has annular flange 16 projecting therefrom which is exteriorly threaded for the reception of a flanged ring 17 which screws on flange 16 and holds a plate 18 secured to the flange. PlatelS is preferably of glass and the'inner face thereof is paint-ed black except at the central portion thereof where a portion in the-shape of a parallelogram which for distinction is called a window and is marked 19 in Fig. 1 and is left clear. This clear portion lies between. the lines 19 in Fig. 2. It will be seen that plate 14 projects upwardly and the top portion normally is in view through the clear window 19. That portion of plate 18 which is normally in sight through this window is painted white and the other-portion of the face of plate 18 is'painted red. Stem]? is connected by tubing 20 to the upper chamber 21 of any standard vacuum feed device.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d Mar. 14, 1922.-
1920. Serial No. 384,004.
Each time the'upper chamber is connected to suction, piston 12 is drawn upwardly and carries plate 14- upwardly and that por- ,7
tion of face thereof which is painted White is raised above the window'and a portion that is painted red comes in sight through the window. As soon as the upper chamber of the feed device is filled the vacuum therein .is broken and valve 12 and plate 14 fall and regular when the feed device is in perfect working order. Should the feed device work sluggishly the red portion of plate 14 would remain in sight a longer time than usual. Should the feed device be out of order to such an extent that the supply of gasolene to the engine was passing directly through the upper chamber the red portion of plate 14 would remain permanently before the" window. Other forms of an indicator may be used;
Having described my invention, lclai'm:
c 1. The combination of vacuum feed de-;
vice for an automobile with a casing adapted for attachment to an, automobile; a piston in said casing; an indicator, device operable by said piston; and a connection-from said casing to the vacuum feed device, whereby,
when thevaeuum feed device is operating, said indicator is operated intermittently.
2. The combination of a vacuum feed device for an automobile with'a vacuum feed indicator comprising a circular body cas ing having a flange adapted for attachment to an automobile; a boss secured to and forming a part ofsaid body, said boss having a chamber therein; aQpiston slidable in said chamber; an indicator plate having a plurality of colors on its face secured to said piston; aplate having a portion trans-- parent anda portion opaque mounted upon said body flange; a flanged ring secured up on the body flange to secure the plate to the body fiange; a stem having a channel therein; said channel opening into the chamber in the boss; and means to attachthe stem to the upper chamber of a vacuum feed device, whereby when vthe vacuum feed device is have hereunto subscribed my name this 14th 7 day of May, 1920.
